John Scott took his free pass in one inning, and his free swing in the next gave Roseville West the only lead it would need.
Scott drilled a single through a drawn-in infield in the fifth inning Thursday night (July 3). The hit drove in the tying and winning runs in a 3-2 victory over Roseville East in the Little League Major All-Star playoffs at Mann Park in Folsom.
An inning earlier, Scott had been intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. But some crafty pitching and some strong defense limited Roseville West to only one run in the inning. Roseville East carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
And then Scott got even.
After a walk and a single by West's Bailey Jensen put runners on first and second. Naab induced Therin Heryford to pop out, then struck out Cory Hylton to bring Scott to the plate.
Naab pitched cautiously around Scott, but the West centerfielder found a pitch he could hit and drove a grounder between East third basemen Scott Bishop and shortstop Alec Sneesby. When the ball got past leftfielder Tony Ellison, both West runners scored.
Heryford, who went the distance for West, worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning to secure the victory. East was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
Roseville East threatened to score several times, but only plated two runs in the third when Naab homered deep to right-centerfield off Heryford. Mark Hunter had reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Roseville West: Trevor Borgschatz, Rex Campbell, Hunter Fournier, Levi Haggerty, Therin Heryford, Cory Hylton, Bailey Jensen, Roman Martinez, Daniel Nakamoto, Alex Roper, John Scott and Jackson Vose.
