Miyagi girls continue to impress
For six gymnasts from Miyagi Gymnastics in Auburn the long road to State Championships ended on Sunday with four level 5 gymnasts and two level 6 gymnasts earning guaranteed spots at their upcoming championship meets. Three sessions of gymnastics meets took place in Auburn Sunday as 10 clubs and 115 gymnasts from Sacramento to Roseville to Auburn and Rancho Cordova competed at the qualifying meet. The top qualifier for the entire day-long event was Miyagi gymnast and 13-year-old Haley Christenson, who had her best meet of the season with a 9.4 on vault, a 9.675 on bars, a 9.2 on beam and a 9.275 on floor. Her total score was 37.55 out of a possible 40 and she took home three gold medals. "I didn't even know I was the top qualifier," she said. "My goal was to get a 37 and I did that. I am both nervous and excited for my state meet." Elizabeth Schudel, Brooke Brown and Leilani Morgan from Miyagi also had solid performances. Schudel won vault for her age division with a 9.375, earned a silver in the all-around with a 36.525 and a bronze on both bars (9.3) and beam (9.1). Brown placed in the top ten in her age division as well as earning the fifth place medal on floor where she scored an 8.8. Morgan won the silver on vault with a 9.2 and a bronze on beam with an 8.625. Her total all-around was a 35.025. In the tougher level 6 competition Miyagi gymnast Ciera Allen won her age division with a combined total of 36.85. Her standout routine of the day was on beam where she scored a 9.7 out of a possible 10. Allen also had a solid showing on bars and earned a 9.075 which won her the gold. Also from Miyagi was Stephanie McCullough who took home the bronze on vault (9.325), bars (8.85), beam (8.925) and in the all-around (35.925). Siena Morgan turned in her best performance on vault and scored a 9.2. The state meet for the Level 5 team is the weekend of Nov. 17 and 18 in Visalia, while the Level 6 event is this coming weekend in Concord. The eight-person Level 4 team from Miyagi Gymnastics had their last qualifying meet on October 27 in Oroville. There, Shelby Jungers from Miyagi earned a 9.425 on vault, 9.175 on bars, 9.025 on beam and a 9.050 on floor for a total of 36.675. Kaeli Allen scored a 9.35 on vault, 8.975 on bars, 7.85 on beam and an 8.85 on floor for a total of 35.025. Kaitlin Woytus earned an 8.550 on vault, 8.775 on bars, 8.700 on beam and a 7.725 on floor for a total of 33.750.
