Miyagi girls shine in Grass Vallley
Seven level 4 gymnasts training at Miyagi Gymnastics in worked together to win the silver as a team at the Gold Country Invitational meet on Sept. 29 in Grass Valley. The level five team from Miyagi Gymnastics won first place at a recent meet. Team members included Leilani Morgan, Haley Christenson and Brooke Brown. Thirteen compulsory level 4, 5 and 6 gymnasts from Miyagi Gymnastics Academy in Auburn competed at the Grass Valley event. The meet was one of a half-dozen meets scheduled for the team this season which leads up to their zone and state championship meets set for November and December. The young gymnasts have taken home many of the top three spots in various events since beginning competition in late August. In Grass Valley, the level 5 team captured first place, the level 4 team won second and the level 6 team placed second with all three levels earning a cumulative 11 gold medals during the day-long competition. Level 5 Haley Christenson, 13, earned the top spot on her team by placing first on the vault (8.9), bars (9.35) and floor (9.35) as well as the all-around (36.15). Teammate Leilani Morgan, 13, earned her highest placement on beam where she took the gold with a 9.0. Morgan placed second on vault (8.85), bars (9.075) and in the all-around (35.775). Also competing in the level 5 group was Brooke Brown, 11, and Elizabeth Schudel, 11. Schudel delivered her standout performance for the day on floor earning a 9.25 and the silver. Brown also performed well on floor earning a bronze with an 8.9. She also took third on vault (8.2), bars (7.275) and in the all-around (32.25). The seven-person level 4 team also had a stand-out day in Grass Valley. The top all around score from the level four team was Devin VanBurkleo who earned a total of 36.075 out of a possible 40. She finished second on vault (9.275), beam (9.0) and floor (9.075). Many of the members of the team placed in the top five in the all-around as well as individual events. Janna Woodward placed first on bars with a 9.05, Maggie Moore placed third on beam with an 8.825.
