Denny's free Grand Slam breakfast offer was attracting a crowd today at the Newcastle eatery as well as other locations.

For a second consecutive year, the restaurant chain offered its $5.99 slam for free, with the first announcement coming out in Super Bowl ads featuring shrieking chickens.

Diners tucked into eggs, bacon, sausage and flapjacks at the Newcastle exit location.

Ken Speck, owner of Newcastle's Ken Speck & Sons, gave a thumbs up sign to signify his pleasure at the meal he was having with his two sons.

"It's a good deal," Speck said. "It's worth getting a late start for."

The restaurant was kept busy throughout the morning period.

"It's wonderful," said general manager Raylene Welker. "It's really good for the community."

Last February, Denny's introduced its first free Grand Slam breakfast promotion, serving about 2 million of them.
