Redskins hope to keep Hillmen away from end zone
Prep Football Playoffs
Calaveras High football coach Jason Weatherby realizes Placer’s made a habit of turning close games into blowouts in the blink of an eye this fall. “We have to limit their big plays,” Weatherby said. Many have tried and most have failed. The Hillmen (10-1) are averaging nearly 450 yards of offense per game and have put up 59 touchdowns this season. Senior Asher Gotzmer went over the 1,300-yard rushing mark last week and scored his 25th touchdown of the season. Junior fullback Josh Turney has found the end zone 17 times and senior receiver Cameron Southward has seven TDs. Junior quarterback Collin Burnett is averaging over 28 yards per completion with 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Placer took the field on Thanksgiving morning for its final tuneup before tonight’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV quarterfinal game against the Redskins. “Practicing on Thanksgiving is always a goal for us and we were fortunate to do that again this year,” Montoya said. “We’re out of school this week but we’ve essentially kept the same schedule with just a few minor adjustments.” Calaveras (7-4) wasn’t expected to be playing on Thanksgiving weekend. But a first-round upset of Dixon sent the Redskins to Auburn. Calaveras is battle-tested after finishing second in the Mother Lode League to Summerville, which will face Central Catholic in another Division IV quarterfinal tonight. Senior Jake Fischer is the power runner in Calaveras’ fly offense while junior Monti Wilson provides the speed and quickness. “They’re very physical,” Montoya said of the Redskins. “They play very hard on both sides of the ball. They have two very good backs. They definitely present some challenges.” The Calaveras defense is small, but well-coached and disciplined. The Redskins haven’t given up more than two touchdowns in their last three games. Senior Gary Gellerman anchors the defense for the Redskins. The 6-2, 215-pound linebacker has racked up 146 tackles on the season and is the emotional leader for the Calaveras squad. Josh Klem is the leader of a Placer defense that has been stellar in recent weeks. The senior linebacker has a team-high 89 tackles. Conner McKenzie, Brett Lenz and Michael Gray are also standouts on the defensive side.

"God please bless and protect ALL of the young warriors taking the field tonight, keep them ALL safe and free from injury. Please protect all the spectators, family, and friends, as they journey to and from the game. Lord this is a contest of strength, stamina, and skill, and there can only be one team that wins, please let the young players be gracious and humble regardless of who wins. Amen! "
P.S.
But we all know it will be the Redskins...Woo Hoo!!!
Good Luck both teams! I mean everything in good fun. Please, no one take offence. I'm just so excited about the game I can't contain myself!
Born_here. While I appreciate your enthusiam to YOUR team I think it would more appropriate to send your thoughts to the Calveras Enterprise. I am sure they would love to hear this as much as I would love to read about the Hillmen on some other paper. I think your name maybe should be changed to born_THERE.
Oh well, it takes all kinds. Enjoy the game!
Username,
About changing my name since I was Born Here in the old Highland Hospital and this is my hometown, and since my family has been here 168 years, I think Born_Here is still appropriate don't you? Like I said earlier; "it is all in good fun" and if you take offence I am sorry that you have issues. It is a unique situation me being a proud Auburn resident, and me attending and playing ball at Calaveras but it is what it was.
Now to eat my crow feathers and all... Congratulations Placer Hillmen on a great game. You played hard and came out the victors. I would like to be able to say that there were bad calls, or elude to some ineligibility of some player (like the other teams were trying to do to you last year), or come up with another plausible excuse, but I cant. You simply were the better team. Placer had a more experienced team with a lot of talent. There were two turn-overs in particular that dimmed the hopes for the Redskins, which made it easy for Placer to score and keep their large lead. Once again, congratualtions on a game well played. Each of you players should be proud of the jobs you did, my hats off to you! Now that you have beaten my alma mater there is no need for a grudge, and I am back on the Placer Hillmen Wagon in full force.
I would also like to add a "Good Job" to the band, you guys rocked too! You had my wife (a Placer graduate) dancing on the Calaveras sideline.
see you on our side next week!! PHSJAZZ1978
