Keep veterans’ parade peaceful
Reader Input

In response to Thad Westphalia’s letter (Reader Input, Nov. 17), it is mildly amusing that some who claim to be free thinkers and advocates for peace stoop to the lowest form of sensationalism to make their point.

Mr. Westphalia’s letter clearly goes off-point when he attempts to claim to know what I think and likening me to war criminals, guards at Abu Ghraib Prison and even murderous Somali soldiers. All this for an idea I had for a peaceful protest.

I chose to speak out against the Veterans for Peace organization (VFP), and the timing of their political message during our Veterans Day parade.

In a world where political correctness is pounded into the head of every man, woman and child, is it politically correct for an organization that offends many veterans and soldiers to make a political statement on their day of honor?

Mr. Westphalia, I ask you, If the VFP members are truly Veterans for Peace, would they have allowed themselves to become involved in a physically violent altercation at last year’s parade? Couldn’t they have just walked away?

They have a right to make a statement, but a responsibility to know the appropriate time.

Why don't you all start mugging little old ladies at the mall instead of retired guys who want to march in a parade.

Geez, you were wrong. What part of "it is wrong to mug other parade participants" did you miss in parade etiquette 101 ?

A year later. You still want to mug parade participants, stifle free speech, and force others into making a false choice of who deserves respect, and your group spends all its energies STILL complaining you can't mug parade participants without risking getting your sorry bums arrested.

You really have some sort of warped mental processes going on if you have nothing better to do with your time than to try to incite people to commit violence upon others who don't agree with you politically.

CanyonRat,

Your responce proves the point of this letter "Mugging little old ladies, stifiling free speech, incite people to commit violence", how many more sensationally overdramatized statements can you make? Last time I checked "turning your back" is not on the list of felonies, I don't even think it's a misdemeanor?

Now please lets let this issue die, it's done and over with. There were no problems at the parade from either side of the fence, and it was a very nice day for our heroes. The VFP marched did what they felt they had to do, and those of us that turned our backs did what we felt we had to do.

Not this again. Let it rest, please.

Euripides,

If you read my post... I agree.

CanyonRat, would you be happy with a anti christian float in the christmas parade? This day is to honor people that fought for our country! It has nothing to do with wether war is just or right, It has nothing to do with war. It is to honor people that made the sacrifice( many had no choice). All the wars had different circumstances and reasons. Pain and suffering ocurred in all of them, but we honor all of the Veterans the same. I am fine with your protest, just dont do it on a day that was ment to honor our veterans. Freedom of speech is what you are hiding behind, but that does not make it alright.

Dulce bellum inexpertis.

Dumbe bellum idiotis

Skeptic,

Translation: "War is sweet to those who have never experienced it". The assumptive conclusion that you have arrived at is quite unfair as I am certain no one here enjoys sending our boys to war. This is just an arrogant assertion by you, further compounded by your narcissistic attempt to prove your intelectual superiority by posting it in Latin. Perhaps you should change your screen name from Skeptic to Pindar, or Erasmus Jr.?

The rest of us may be hic's to you, but we're not all "dumb hic's".

Born...not dumb...just wrong.

Bastiat....intellectual.....but still wrong

fourgen...intellectual?...thank you...wrong?...about what?
