Old Town aiming to have historical fun
Western shoot-outs planned
Things are going to get pretty loud in Auburn this weekend. The Sierra Sixguns and Sidekicks are barreling into Old Town Auburn Saturday to hold three Wild West shootouts. Saturday’s shoot-out, sponsored by the Old Town Business Association, will hopefully be the first of many more, said Alexandra Hastings-Carnahan, owner of Tsuda’s Old Town Eatery. “I really want Old Town to reflect its foundings,” said Hastings-Carnahan. “I really want to give people, off the Interstate, an opportunity to step back in time, to learn the history of a very important part of California. My goal is to offer a free program that allows people to enjoy what the West was like.” Sierra Sixguns and Sidekicks, a member of the American Frontier Reenactment Guild, has 26 members currently, with 15-18 members typically participating in a re-enactment, said Mike Belanger, club president and Auburn resident. “We’re a family group,” Belanger said. “We study the history of the Old West and we try to reenact that through comedy skits and historical skits.” Each reenactment starts with a safety show demonstrating how dangerous working with firearms can be, even when using blanks. “Even though it’s a fun thing for us, a hobby, it is very dangerous,” Belanger said. Old Town’s central square will be closed to traffic during Saturday’s shootouts, which are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Belanger, also known as “Cactus Kid” when he’s in character, said crowd members should keep an ear out for anyone yelling “Fire in the hole!” Consider it a warning for gunfire. “Unfortunately, when we do these things someone will get caught off guard,” he said. Belanger said his group’s re-enactment routine includes a Hollywood-style gunfight, “then we show what we would consider an Old West gun fight.” “If somebody would have been angry with someone, they probably would have walked up to them and shot them,” Belanger explained. The group has participated in festivals all over the area, and Belanger is excited to have a gig in Auburn, and not just because it’s closer to home. “I think it suits Auburn. It fits the backdrop and it fits the history,” he said. “Auburn is an old gold mining town. It came into existence during the Gold Rush. Auburn was part of the west. You can’t get a better backdrop than Auburn for this type of thing.”
