County sheriff deputy arrested for DUI
By Lauren Gibbs, The Placer Herald
John Caliguire

Placer County Sheriff’s Deputy John Caliguire of Rocklin was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence, according to authorities.

About 9 a.m. on Nov. 7, Rocklin Police dispatchers received a call reporting a driver “who was unable to maintain lanes” in the area of Sunset Boulevard and Topaz Avenue, according to the arrest report. Once officers arrived, the driver was advised to stop near Coppervale Drive and Little Rock Road, where Caliguire got out of the silver pickup truck and “could barely stand,” according to the report.

The reporting officer “immediately smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.”

Caliguire was arrested for driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of 0.31 and 0.33 – nearly four times over the legal limit.

Jeff Ausnow, spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, said Caliguire has been a deputy sheriff for the department for eight years. The department is aware of Caliguire’s arrest and he remains on active duty during the department’s pending internal investigation, Ausnow said.

“The Placer County Sheriff’s Department takes drunk driving very seriously and a violation of this law would be unacceptable behavior for a member of our department,” Ausnow said.

Ironic that he's a bailiff who was tasked with handcuffing defendants in court who are remanded into custody.

He's been allowed back to work pending the investigation....that's gotta be uncomfortable.

I feel for this guy. He needs some serious help or he will do it again and again and again.

Cabs are much cheaper than a DUI.

DON"T DRINK and DRIVE

Should have just stood in his front yard and fired off a few shots in front of witnessess. Never would have hit the papers and unlike those who don't have the benefit of a badge, wouldn't have gone to jail.

Hope, he's reached his personal low.

Well better late than never. Thats some good old fashon reporting, 12 days later. Police should be held to a higher standard. They took an oath. The penalty should be doubled!

People, don't complain, at least this story made the papers even if a tad late. The Lt. Savage story never made it and unlike this guy it will probably go totally unpunished even though the potential for serious injury or death to others was just as great. I guess the old saying that rank has its privileges still applies in PCSO

raiderdave7- i agree, the penalty should be doubled and he should be fired.

Auburnative. We know you hate cops. Although there is no excuse and it's not acceptable for thus deputy to drink and drive, it's a misdemeanor and he most likely won't lose his job. I'm sure he will face dire consequences, not to mention the embarassment he must feel around his peers. If you were arrested for DUI would you be fired? Oh, wait...you can't answer that because you have no job. You only sit home on the Internet collecting government checks and judging others.

I knew Caliguire when he was a Correctional Officer in Nevada County Jail about 15 years ago. He was an excellent C.O., with huge value for the law. He is a human being, who made a mistake, like everyone else. It's funny how so many people spend so much time judging people they have never had a chance to get to know, let alone even had a conversation with.

Wow, He was a good cop. This guy screwed up but shouldnt lose his job. I hope he gets a second chance.

Loomis: So it was Lt. Savage Huh, and nary a word from the AJ? I guess rank does have it privileges. Unlike your General Deputy who makes a stupid decision and gets his name, face and story all over the media, t.v.. radio, news papers. Makes you really wonder what goes on in the high ranks of the Sheriffs Department.

Funny how this came out in the other papers days ago, and the AJ finally decided to post. He is held to a higher standard as a public servant, and it is probably not the first time he has been drunk driving, a .31 is not just a little drunk. Im sure the uniion will come in to back him up and keep his job, and maybe he can go out and do it again...he should be relegated to paper pushing, not an deputy.

With a DUI he will lose his CDL. Can he perform his duties without one? Or do cops get special privledges and get to keep theirs. Many people lose their jobs when they get DUI's. I am an auto mechanic and most shops wont even hire you with a ticket on your record because of the insurance costs to the shop owner. My point is if I get a DUI I broke the law. When John got a DUI he broke the law and broke his Oath to uphold the law and protect the public. I think that should be a crime to break an officers Oath. I hope John gets the treatment he needs to get well, I just think he should be punished for his actions.

What a double standard. This guy gets dragged through the media mud, while the leutenant gun shooting story gets axed. There are a range of potential charges with that incident..could be a more serious crime & punishment than the drunk driving incident. For those who aren't aware of the particulars, here's the link to the story on New 10

In all honesty, this guy is getting a heck of a lot more publicity than J. Q. Public would get if he was stopped for DUI and had not caused an accident. The AJ is notorious for missing stories There was a big accident by my house a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't even tell what make of car it was until I saw the make's badge and nary a word on the paper.

And yes, some people in the private sector would loose their jobs if they got a DUI and lost their driver's license.

There are special punishments for DUI offenders with a BAC over .10

If this guy is treated like the rest of the population, he's not going to be driving for a while and attending several court-mandated DUI classes. .31% BAC is very, very intoxicated.

His punishment IS going to be doubled. If he's convicted, he will have to do all the court ordered stuff that everyone else has to. He will lose his license I believe for one year. And unlike regular jobs where the boss may not know about the DUI, If John is seen rolling into work on the driver's side of the car, everyone will know and he will get in trouble again for driving on a suspended license. How many people with regular jobs get fired for a driving on a suspended locense citation? He's going to have to have someone drive him to work for the next year. In addition, there will be an internal affairs investigation, in which the allegations will be sustained. (they always are). He will likely get suspension without pay. He can't drive so he can't patrol. He will likely be assigned jail duty. He may even be demoted to correctional officer, and this will be in his employee file forever. I think the depatrment disciplinary action is going to be worse for him than the conviction. I've heard this time and time again with these officers (and there have been others). The department has no tolerance for this type of conduct. So, before you start crying "favoratism" make sure you have all the facts.

steelybob one has to remember this is entertainment, the factual non biased news reporting went out the door years ago, in lieu of selling advertising.

Well said analyst. I'm so sad for you auburnite that you find a man's crisis as entertainment. You need therapy my sick friend.

Harleyrider the good thing about this story is that this man did not make it someone elses crisis by maiming or killing them in accident because he was driving while intoxicated. It was likely not the first time he drove intoxicated but lets hope it was the last time. Remember Billy Moon was a second offender and he sits in prison for years for his crime.

Thanks for laying it out for us Analyst.

harleyrider, people in the public trust are held to higher standards. I'm not saying this guy should have been dragged through the mud. He needs serious help and a strong support base so he can find out why he drinks the way he does. Maybe he should not drink at all.

As Jon Green said "Hope, he's reached his personal low."

It is cheaper to take a cab to Tahoe and back than to it is to get a DUI.

DON'T DRINK and DRIVE

Chuxxr. Absolutely true. Law enforcement should set the example. Bluebird, I never said it was his first time. A poor choice no doubt.

Drunk driving is wrong and he should be punished. For those who think Law Enforcement personnel should be treated different, a so called "higher standard" then everyone else (which I agree they should), then why are the same people who say this also saying they should take a higher pay cut just because everyone else is. You can't have it both ways, either they are at a higher standard and should be paid at such and held to answer for it or treated like everyone else. The fact is the "cop haters" like auburnite just want it both ways.

BlueBird- Check the In-custody roster for the Placer County Jail.... There you find William Moon. He's definitely not in prison, but the boy who died is still gone.

Auburnite- Just how many times have you been arrested? Your pure hate for law enforcement is amazing.

Sorry titanium I guess I am not well versed on the difference between prison and jail. All the same to me.

Catdady. Well put. cops are and should be held to a higher standard. It obvious this guy is fighting some demons. People, remember those who are in that line of work are still members of the human race and make mistakes. He'll be dealt with severely but hopefully also gets referred some help.

Look out! The aluminium tu-tu is in a wad again.

Damn, he looks sober to me, I think,.....I think I see a picture there. Kidding, double standards for punishment...not without double pay. There is no reason for law enforcement to be treated differently (up or down) for identical situations. Except for APD cops who insist that the Auburn Ravine speed limits be observed...and stop signs too...how annoying...not really. I'm happy driving 25 and taking a 1 second stop at the stop signs, it pisses so many people off. Actually, I think most people are getting usd to it. Disregard the last rant, off post, sorry, couldn't help it,....paranoia reigns. Absolutely no offense APD...just kidding...OK...please

Wow jab, what have you been dinking?

analyst:......dinking? YIKES! No dinking going on here, not for me dude. Is dinking legal? I'm so very kidding you Analyst. It's freekin iced tea and not particulary fine iced tea at that.

Jab

I was joking. Sorry about the typo. I do that alot.
