GOP should exhibit courage
Reader Input
Nancy Gibbs in her Nov. 9 Time Magazine essay writes, “Humility leaves room for complexity, honors honest dissent, welcomes the outlandish idea that sweeps past ideology and feeds invention.” “...The odds are better (in resolving issues as health care, climate change, etc.) if we come to the table assuming we don’t already have all the answers.” By allowing the country’s few insurance corporations and drug companies to dictate what is best for Americans, the Republican Party, with only few exceptions, has chosen debate absentia — true to conservative nature — to eschew change. Sadly, of the (Tom) McClintock ilk, we cannot expect resolution to our nationwide crisis of health care, global warming, Wall Street greed or bank card usury. Our hope rests with those political representatives who have the courage to sit at the table and impartially seek resolution. How long must we wait to see courage in our representative district? Amen!
Nancy: Nice LTE, but it would be great if the Democrats and President Obama could follow your advise and show the courage to sit at the table and seek resolution. Nancy, Harry and President Obama have never 'asked' the republicans for their view on the health care issues we face. Republicans have been ' Locked' out of conferences on health care conducted by Democrats. President Obama who campaigned on bi-partisanship has never invited the republicans to the White House to talk about health care issues. So much for working together when one side will not even entertain listening to the other side.
I am not taking political sides here, just pointing out some facts of the matter.
Howard Koons, I'm sure Mr. McClintock would love to have the power you claim he has. He is just one vote, he is powerless to stop or initiate anything by himself. Perhaps you should read his letter, the one right above yours, you may get a better perspective or at the very least the other side of the coin.
Chase2u, You are a down right lier. The fact is the republicans were invited to talks on health care. Ms. Snow your republican has stated on many occasions that her fellow republicans never came to the meetings because of partisan politics and also stated on many occasions that the doors were always unlocked but they never showed up. Just pointing out some real facts of the matter.
Howard Koons is one of the area’s local Democratic activists. It’s just another partisan attack. I recommend you take Loomis’ advice and read Mr. MClintock’s letter.
Chasing your tail.
Excuse me? Obama has repeatedly brought Senior leadership to the whiite house from both parties for discussions on critical issues facing the nation.
Healthcare? The GOP promised to develop a comprehensive proposal last summer for Healthcare reform. Guess what? It's still vapor ware.
The bottom line is I agree with you that Congress and the White House have to work together. Laying it all in Obama's lap and he Dem's is a gutless cop out.
GlennM: Perhaps you might be correct that repubs never went to any of the meetings. Why try and talk to someone who you already know going into the conversation is not going to pay any attention to what you have to say or even consider any of your input into the particular matter at hand? That is how Nancy and friends regard the repubs... ohhhh, now that is not partisan is it? Kinda like trying to convince you that Obama does not walk on water. No matter what I or anyone else says you will always believe that he walks on water.
Chrishamm, The Repubs have presentented many health care proposals on the floor of the Senate and Congress for consideration. Only to have them blocked because they do not have enough votes to bring the proposals to discussion. I.E. Demos don't want to hear them or talk about them.
It's like trying to talk to CanyonRat.
You know what I say, ignore the daily, droning rhetoric from the PR firm that is trying to spin McCarpetbag as a good thing, and read the text of the bills that he votes against.
You will then see that the letter writer is correct, Mr. McClintock has no solutions. This was evident from his campaign rhetoric. He was installed by the business interests to continue the Bush/Cheney administration agenda, to just vote "NO" on everything, and to continue to throttle the Democratic administration. In this, he is successful at keeping himself well employed by being a professional government failure at his jobs.
McClintock co sponsored a bill by Devin Nunes which was ghostwritten by insurance lobbyists. It was ridiculous. It did not reform anything. It was consigned to the trash bin. The text is available. Read the bill.
Republicans participated in the legislative committees and had to vote, even if they were "no" votes, to get these bills out of committee. So some of the commenters are incorrect in their assertions that there was no Republican input. We saw this during the Senate Finance Committee hearings on C span. Other hearings are webcast or written up. ANYBODY can go to official government sites and follow the activities of certain House and Senate government committees. Unfortunately McClintock seems to have enough staffer spammers and supporters and teaparty hacks, to keep up the mis information rhetoric indefinitely.
CR: The basic facts of the matter is that the repubs do not have enough voting power to do anything one way or the other. Our President is a Democrat, Congress and the Senate are controlled by Democrats, hence the Dems have 100% power over everything. After almost a year why are we still talking about Fixing health care at this point. Health Care along with a bunch of other stuff should have been fixed by now. What is the hold up? Can't be the republicans fault ya know.
I think the problem is with defecting democrats who are not towing the democratic line. Not the republicans and the carpet bagger as you call him.
When is "voted present" going to make a foreign policy decision?
The GOP has no courage. The Obama administration has openly solicited input from the GOP. Remember, it was spun like they, Obama, were looking to silence critics. That some how any respondents would be re-educated in the "Camps." Fear mongering and misdirection are key to GOP strategy. The medical, pharmacuetical, insurance triangle has ripped JQP off and everyone with a half of brain knows this. They have proven again and again that they won't stop. We the People voted in this administration and they have taken on the triangle. It's time for the triangle to include the consumer.
People come first, before the triangle, as it should be.
These insurance companies have been exempt from anti-trust laws. They took advantage of us and both sides of the aisle share the responsibility for this madness. The status quo is unacceptable.
The medical, pharmacuetical, insurance triangle has bought more Democratic votes then Republicans since 2006. Check the facts on PAC's and other donations to our wonderful bunch of elected officials. Hammering one party and not the other is exactly what the majority party (D or R) always thrives on. Is anyone listening? We need a real change and as long as lobbyists contol both parties which control 2 of the 3 branches of government we are DOOMED.
Only a fool welcomes change when it damages our country. Only a fool would try to negotiate for less damage vs. more damage. It takes courage to stand for what you believe and know by history is right...which in this case is NOT the takeover of another industry by government wags and selfish non-taxpayers.
FYI: the GOP has attempted many times to bring a cost-effective bill that actually addresses needed changes to the floor of the House...only to be stopped dead by the Pelosi/Reid/Obama wall.
Don't preach about "courage" or cooperation when you have ignored the facts yourself.
BTW Howard;
there is NO health care "crisis";
there is no verifiable evidence of human caused global warming...especially during this cooling trend, nor that the alleged 1 degree warming would be harmful in any way if it sustains, nor that it is not caused by solar activity;
bank card usury is simple to avoid --- pay off your credit cards every month!
And, I like my insurance just as it is, thank you. I worked for it and I don't want it squandered in some socialist government pool run by an IRS-like gestapo who threatens my family with penalties if I don't play their game. But you're welcome to give your money to the feds for whatever you want...if you don't already get it from them (ooops, us).
three cheers for Deja_View.
