Where go our tax dollars?
Reader Input
I think I have our government all figured out: We pay gas tax, we pay sales tax, we pay income tax, we pay property tax, we pay state tax, we pay federal tax, we pay all kinds of taxes. But I note when we need a new school, or facility, or new bridge, or repaired bridge, or roadwork, or fire protection, or just about anything, it almost always only gets done when a bond is placed against it in order to raise the money for it. Hmm ... I wonder where all that tax money goes? Larry Stahl, Meadow Vista

Repubs get into office by promising to enact tax cuts. Then said cuts create budget crisis. Then they have to borrow. Then the debt to be serviced goes higher.
Then the annual budget ransom gridlock meltdown, which delay increases the debt.
Repubs in CA do love themselves some bond money for really big things.
Taxes go for maintenance and upkeep. There's a lot more of that going on than is acknowledged.
Larry: Canyonrat's response gives you chills up your spine doesn't it?
Its strictly a partisan denial of the fact that the problem is spending. We have too many programs, too many union employees, too little being done for the tax dollars you give up.
To Canyonrat, the problem is not enough taxes. To most of the rest of the world, the problem is too much spending.
Over spending and too many social programs. There are probably many really needy.... BUT... there are many playing the game to get money.
Larry, you forgot to mention all the "fees", they are not called taxes in order to circumvent Proposition 13 mandates. But the question remains, where do our fee dollars go to?
Government at all levels and from all sides of the political spectrum spend enough money to make a drunken sailor proud. Sorry Navy vets, it's just an old saying, nothing against the Navy. Go Army.
To pay interest on United States Debt instruments held primarily by the Chinese. Why do you think their Prime Minister called for the United States to get its financial house in order? They do not want the Dollar value to go into a free-fall thus making the worthless paper we sold them more worthless. Democrats and Republicans are equally to blame.
Solution? We must start with changing DC mentality of spending.
Here's an idea: Let move the nation's capitol to Bismark, ND. No one wants to go there, so that would the first plus.
Those who remember history are doomed to keep reminding the rest just how this happened. I called Bush son of HW a disaster and a con back in 1998.
Gov Schwartz. did the same thing, first action in office he cuts the vehicle tax. Dumb****.
Sparky McTeabagger pulled the same stunt with his setting up the Enron gig and then the car tax, which was funded by some SoCal casino money.
Deadbeats.
Then there is potentially the biggest tax increase I can remember - the "premium" for the health care bill congress just voted on.
The dollar is already in the tank. the price of gold is the highest it has ever been. Gold has doubled in value since 1990. Jewelry and Dental work is going to be very expensive with 2009 dollars. Our balance of trade may improve. I'm waiting for 3rd world countries to start out sourcing their manufacturing to the US.
over $200,000 of our tax dollars are going to pave the juror parking lot in Auburn.
I know it's redevelopment money. But thats where it's going.
are you new to the USA? our government and local leaders are crooks. our founding fathers never intended in career politicians. they knew what would happen to our country.
The government has become a huge entity that needs a lot of money to sustain itself. It is always hungry for more and the best way to secure votes is to promise it to those who would love to beneifit at the expense of others or have been duped into thinking that they are more caring and compassionate toward the plight of those less fortunate then themselves. Feel free to give out of your pocket for the things you feel are important., you want to save the spotted stink beetle-be my guest!
I think cutting federal funding for Illegal aliens( I know that is not the politically correct term-) would be a great place to start. Maybe beginning with our prisons. How much does it cost to feed, house, give medical aid and offer other benefits to illegal felons that are in our prisons on our dime? Deport at the expense of the offender's country. Stick to English as our language and stop spending money to print DMV forms, voter info,WIC and food stamps in several languages. Why are we cutting music and art classes and teaching immersion classes where English speaking elementary school students are taught only in spanish?
Those don't even touch things such as the fees it takes to build a tool shed in Placer County!
Things are tight for everyone. The government needs to stop spending money we don't have on programs most tax payers don't want and printing more money will not fix the problem..
CR, You only find history that you agree with. "Gov Schwartz. did the same thing, first action in office he cuts the vehicle tax. Dumb". Who proposed this in the first place? Oops. a Demorat. Thank God they did.
Larry, "Hmm ... I wonder where all that tax money goes? " The tax money goes to payoff the interest on the bond. The bigger the bond the larger the interest. Who's getting that money? Nice scam going on in Placer County.
With the $578.6 billion spent in 2009 on the military and the wars every American citizen could have free health care. There would still be enough money left over to pay for a complete college education for every graduating high school senior in America.

Hummm, republican problem only. Let us see here, our State is basically flat out broke period end of story. Most Californians are struggling to just keep their heads above water and many are failing to even do that. Cities, County's, special districts are going broke faster that you can count them. And DEMOCRAT Darrel Steinberg praises the democratically controlled capitol of Kalifornia for passing legislation for over 10 billion dollars in bonds for a canal!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God we get to vote on this next November before the money is spent.......
Funny how some people do not understand that WE DO NOT HAVE ANY MONEY TO SPEND so would you kindly ask Darrel to put down his glass of cool-aid and step back into reality. Who in their right mind would even think of thinking of spending 10 billion in bonds at this time.
Chuxxr, shame on you badmouthing Placer County. Placer is one of the most efficiently run Counties in the Nation, just look at the measly salaries it pays their leadership, Miller, Colwell, etc. When compared to what they pay the rank and file their salaries pale. That is the proper way to run any organization, you pay a lot to those that do the work and little to those that just offer guidance. They work on the princople that a happy employee is a productive employee.

Where do all the taxes go you ask? Well lets see california now has one of the biggest prison industry complex's in the world. Despite the fact that violent crime statistics have gone down prison popluations are exploding. Who benefits from high prison popluations? Private busineess's who provide prison buildings, prison security systems. prison clothing, prisoner medical care, prisoner dental care, prisoner matteress's, sheets and other bedding materials, prison plumbing, prisoner transportation, prisoner food, computers for prisoners etc etc and the list goes on and on.. that is just one sector that tax payer money is spent on. Tax payer pays for private architechural, engineer and medical consultants. Tax payer money pays for private studies to determine clean air, clean water and clean food requirements. See a pattern here? Private business is as much dependant on tax payer funds as government is dependant on private taxes. They are all interwoven. And you all wonder why taxes never go away....
