No cause to treat veterans callously
Reader Input
I was shocked and saddened to read that one of our fellow citizens is asking people to turn their backs on the Veterans for Peace when they march in the Veterans Day parade here in Auburn on Nov. 11. My husband, my brother and four of my brothers-in-law are veterans of World War II and/or Vietnam. Any one of them would walk proudly with the Veterans for Peace. The key word here is “veteran.” This shameful suggestion harkens back to the callous treatment of many Americans towards our soldiers returning home from Vietnam. Let’s not repeat this dishonorable behavior. We should stand proud with all our veterans, past, present and future. Elinor Petuskey, Newcastle

Maybe the Vets for "Peace" ("peace" without fighting for it?) should just march as VETS ....and without their political message (like everyone else!
They have picked the speedbumps of Auburn to enact Swiftboatie's Last Stand.
I also have many vets in family, including WWII, Reagan area, and Vietnam. At this point, the best thing would be just to ignore their little hissy fit, if they want to turn their backs like a toddler needing a time out, so be it. Let them embarrass themselves.
Canyon, Peace on you.
C-R, I won't be attending the parade. If I were, I would never turn my back on a veteran regardless of his or her views, I would however turn my back on any draft dodger trying to pass himself as a veteran. Can you see the difference?
loomis, how would you identify them? Can you be sure to just follow ranks of those that are turning their backs on all those VFPs, even the veterans? I'm not saying I disagree with you. I'm just wondering if you can see the difference?
Dishonoring a veteran is total ignorance of what the veteran personally gave to our country. The politics of most wars does not deserve honoring, but the men and women who served in them, many forced by the draft, deserve unlimited respect and honor. How many of this people dishonoring vets are chickenhawks?
Fishdella, What draft? The military service is now all volunteer. What branch of the military did you serve in?
JonGreen: Ish meant vietnam vets for example...they were drafted. Let me know if you need more of my help here...I'd be more than happy to explain.
BTW, Peace all over you...
roland, I couldn't tell them apart but we both know that there are some in the VFP ranks (draft dodgers). It's up to their conscience to lie to those lining the parade route in order to further their cause. If they didn't have the guts to serve, and escaped out of the country they should not be entitled to march in the parade. That is the reason I will not be attending this year.
There are vets, then there are those that lucked out and didn't get drafted and there are those that chose to run. I may not be able to tell the difference but there IS a difference.
Fishdella is still living in the 60's
Did Jack just call himself a “chickenhawk”?
Did p50 just prove himself an idiot?
