Collin Burnett, Cameron Southward and Asher Gotzmer brought the big plays back to LeFebvre Stadium Friday night. The Placer High football team buried the memories of its offensive dud against Lincoln with some fireworks in the first half against Colfax. Then the Hillmen hung on for a 34-27 victory against the determined Falcons. Burnett completed his first seven passes, including two perfect touchdown passes to Southward and a 76-yard bomb to Gotzmer. Placer (8-1 overall, 4-1 Pioneer Valley League) opened up a 28-7 lead by halftime and looked to be in full control. But the Falcons (6-3, 3-2) fought back behind their star tailback Pat Rawlins. He finished with 188 yards and scored on runs of 34, 15, 13 and 5 yards to make things interesting. Colfax opened the second half with an impressive 69-yard yard touchdown march. Placer answered with an even better 88-yard drive. Gotzmer converted a tough four yards on a crucial fourth down in Colfax territory. On the next play, Burnett lofted a pass to Southward, who tip-toed along the corner of the end zone and caught the ball for a touchdown. It proved to be a decisive one. The Falcons responded, thanks to a 46-yard pass from Mark Macholz to Randy Brown that set up Rawlins’ third TD. After trading possessions, Colfax got a stop and got the ball back midway through the fourth quarter. Josh Moreno provided a spark with a 49-yard burst and Rawlins capped a long drive with his final TD, making it 34-27 game. But Southward covered the Falcons’ onside kick and Josh Turney picked up a crucial first down to end the game. “We felt like we were in control the whole time,” Turney said. “We knew we were going to win, but (Colfax) always plays hard, especially against us.” Placer maintained its Pioneer Valley League title hopes, but the Hillmen will need some help from the Falcons next week. Lincoln (9-0, 5-0) will visit Colfax in the regular season finale while Placer is at Whitney. Colfax JV 39 Placer 14 - Hunter Owens rushed for 212 yards on 22 carries and scored one touchdown and quarterback Nolan Karbowski added 148 more yards and two touchdowns as Colfax improved to 8-1 with the lopsided win over the Hillmen. Colfax, which also received a pair of touchdowns from Sam Quinlan, finished the game with 477 yards of offense. Zac Coffman, Brett Fowler, Cory Rodgers and David Mowbray were the defensive standouts for the Falcons. Johnny Foley threw a touchdown pass and also ran for a score for the Hillmen who fell to 7-2.

GREAT GAME FELLAS, I HOPE YOU SAVED SOME ENERGY FOR WHITNEY. PHSJAZZ1978
nice game!
Congratulations Placer - just keep taking one at a time! Good luck next week.
Don't want to forget our Freshman team on Thursday - good game and thanks for a great season -see you next week at Whitney! (hi cr)!!
By the article, sounds like it was a great game between two great teams. The PVL has some great competition and this year its the best! Good luck Hillmen next week, cuz my Whit Wildcats will be ready for you. It will be a 'mini-me' to the SFL Rock/DO game. Look forward to the game and hope both sides remain injury-free. Who knows, if Colfax does their thang next week, Whit or Placer may be 'co-PVL Champs".... Falcons- you still have a shot at the 'at-large bid' in the offs. The key to beating Lincoln is avoiding turn-overs and fumbles. That's where they capitalize. The Zebs are a good team, but from what I've seen, they can be shut down....
C'ya next week Hillmen, until then.....
GOOOOOOO CATS!
Nicely written article Mr. Mordhorst...FAIR and BALANCED!!!!
I'm curious as to what Mr. "My kid was a basketball MVP at Colfax" Krizman thinks about his 35-14 analysis? Part of the reason for Placer's 34 points was TURNOVERS converted to scores. Well the Hillmen's defense DID shut down Pat Rawlins...holding him to under 200 yards and only four touchdowns!
I give full credit to the Hillmen who played an outstanding game.....hey, they HAD to in order to beat the Falcons! Two perfectly thrown and indefensible corner passes did the trick. I saw one of them right in front of me (#2's reception) and the only way to have defensed that TD would have been to take an interference penalty....same with the other corner pass.
It was a great game....coming back from a 3-TD deficit and then having Placer have to hang on to secure the win...this year. We look forward to your visit next year!
River rat You left out one thing that I noticed, Placer did shut down Colfax, alot of the first half they stuffed them, then as expected in a great team they adjusted and Rawlins went to work, I also sensed a let down in Placers D towards the end of the 3rd. It was a close game in the end thats for sure. I hope you dont lose too much sleep stressing about Krizman.
Mr. Mordhorst, really enjoy your articles! Keep writing!!!! (thanks for reminding me riverrat66)
Congratulations Hillmen on your impressive First half and your victory. Congratulations Colfax on showing the heart of a Lion and especially the heart and Guts exhibited by Falcons running back Pat Rawlins. I appreciate Pat so much for his hard play and his humble nature after scoring all the touchdowns he does. You never see him Hot Dog it or draw attention to himself by making gestures on field. He lets his performance speak for itself . I hope our talented Junior and Sophmore classes will learn from Pat. Go get the Zebra's. Break all the records Pat. Our often non-noticed lineman have done a great job also-I'm sure Pat would be the first one to acknowledge them.
Good and hard fought game by both teams. I was glad to see Colfax come back in the second half rather than roll over and quit.
My only criticism on the night has to do with the play calling during the final minute. Once the Hillmen got the final 1st down with a minute plus remaining, and Colfax out of timeouts, what in the world is Montoya calling running plays for???? Only two things were gonna happen: a fumble that could be returned for a score, or an injury. Sure enough, Josh Klem comes limping off the field hurt. What in the world is the coaching staff thinking? How about victory formation and taking a knee?
I hope Josh is ok.
Good game, but that play calling at the end has to really be questioned.
Go Hillmen, beat Whitney !!
hntndux: Ha! Ha!! No, I don't sress about a whole lot and yeah, we didn't do much offensively in the first half. I believe I gave the Hillmen credit...FULL CREDIT...for playing an outstanding game...you might have missed that sentence. Actually, I know Dave and wanted to give him some good-natured ribbing...as others did. He doesn't have thin skin and it will always be part of the rivalry as long as he wears the Green and Yeller and I wear the Green and Silver. Have a nice night....I surely will. One more kudos I'll give you guys is that half-time show that you put on. Great band....great dances....and routines.
BTW, if Placer admin needs money for more lighting, we'll start up a collection to help you out.
Fredthehillman... Actually Colfax saved their last 2 time outs after we got a first down and called timeout after 1st and 2nd down. We ran a play on 3rd down and took a knee on 4th. They had the ability to stop the clock up until that point and if they take a knee all 4 downs we are forced to punt. Coach Montoya did exactly the right thing. Great game, nice win, I hope we get a home playoff game. When was the last Home playoff game?
River rat, Thanks, its nice to hear folks settle down and be civil!!, I agree on the lights thing, I spoke with one of the VP's Fri. nite about raising the guest seats, and it is at least something they are trying to figure out, cause they do suck. I think we all have some good football to look forward too, it would be nice to see the kids support each other in the playoffs once they are out, who ever it might be. After all we are alll mostly friends and GO PVL!!! Good Luck next week it sure would be nice to see you guys spoil Lincolns night!! PHSJAZZ1978
Great game! Go get em next week!
Fan2009,
Well, since I do not have the stat sheet so I can check the timeout situation to know for certain, it is hard for me to dispute you. I do believe I am correct about Placer running a play or two that was un-needed (which Klem was injured ) when they could have taken a knee. The possibility of me being wrong does exist. Colfax may have still had a timeout left. (Why they wouldn't have used them all, if you are correct, I do not know). You never should leave the field with one in your pocket only down by one score.
However, I will challenge your claim of taking the knee on 4th down. I guarantee you that was not the case, as taking a knee ends the play, and if it was 4th down - the clock would stop, and there would have been a change of possession, and Colfax would have gotten the ball. So the knee was either on 2nd or 3rd down NOT 4th down.
Either way, it was a good win for Placer. Big game next week at Whitney. Hillmen can share the league title, or end up in 3rd place pending on what happens next Fri night.
Great game. Both teams had heart and played until the end. Hope Colfax wins this Friday! Would love to see Lincoln finally upset. Good Luck to both Placer & Colfax FRiday !
In my opinion there are two teams that could bump Lincoln, and one has already lost to them. I'm sure every Hillmen fan will be listening to the score of the Colfax -Lincoln game. You folks have a great program, and a jv team that will be a true competitor when they move up to varsity. Good luck Hillme, and good luck Falcons.
It makes me sad as a Zebra parent, that there is so much hatred for Lincoln just because they have a great team! What a bunch of poor sports...why do you want to see them get upset? Why not be happy for a team that's doing well? I think all this BS talk is just plain jealousy! Whatever, the proof is in the 9 W's after the scores. I hope they go 10-0..even if they don't I'm very proud of them! GO ZEBRAS!
I love Pat Rawlins?
:)
