Recreation Park getting major upgrades

Eric Dominguez of PBM Construction Inc. cuts frame work as part of Recreation Park's bathroom and locker room renovation located in their gym on Friday afternoon.

The oldest facility in the Auburn Area Recreation and Park District is getting a major facelift as work continues this week at the main building at Recreation Park.

Here’s what’s being done:

Locker room remodel

Major renovations are underway on the locker rooms. The work, being completed by PBM Construction, includes new showers, lockers and skylights. Crews are also updating the electrical system in the building and providing improved accessibility for the disabled. The remodel should be complete after the first of the year, said District Administrator Kahl Muscott, just in time for local swim teams to start their seasons in February. Cost: $400,000.

“(The locker room) was a nightmare. It was something where families from other teams were embarrassed by the locker rooms they looked so bad,” said Jeff Ambrosia, past-president of the Auburn Robalos swim team and Master Swimmer. “We’re thrilled the renovations are taking place and appreciate the effort by the ARD board that made it possible. It’s much overdue. We eagerly await completion.”

Reroofing the gym

A leaky roof has plagued the gym building, causing numerous puddles during the last few rainy seasons. But with new roof being installed by contractors Gudgel-Yancey, that should be a thing of the past. Muscott said work is around 70 percent complete and should be wrapping up in the next couple weeks. Cost: $89,000.

“We patched and repaired as much of the roof as we could during the last few years,” Muscott said. “We finally reached a point where we had to do a major roof replacement. While this isn’t the sexiest of projects, it will make a big difference in our ability to maintain our aging infrastructure.”

Registration kiosk

A new kiosk that will allow visitors to register for ARD programs in the gym lobby has been installed. Signups for ARD classes, camps and leagues can be done using the kiosk, which connects to the online registration at auburnrec.com. The kiosk, which has been dubbed “Bob” by ARD staff, is up and running. Cost: $3,500.

“We’ve reduced the hours of our customer service office (as a cost-cutting measure), so this was one of those ideas if people come by to register and, oh darn, the office is closed, they can do it right there online,” Muscott said.

With all this money they are throwing around these days Why can't they find a way to identify these parks. I have lived here for over 40 years and I still have trouble with Auburn Rec Park. WHERE IS IT ? WHICH ONE ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT? Seems like every time you have some kind of event at one of the parks its a problem trying to explain especially to out of towners. Where is Richardson dr.or Racetrack or the meeting place off Maidu ??? To start how about Rec. park North 49, Rec.park Auburn Folsom and Rec.park Maidu or Auburn Dam

Cannot wait to see the new and remodeled locker and bathrooms. They have needed some updating for a very long time.

Where is all this money coming from?

watchit - They do have names - ask a local. :) The North Auburn Park (off of Richardson) usually goes by Chana Park, though I've heard it called Regional Park also. The south Auburn Park (off of Racetrack) is usually called ARD Main - it's the only park in Auburn with a pool - this article calls it "Recreation Park". The area with the skate park and meeting room is Auburn Overlook Park (formerly known as Auburn Dam Overlook).

I'll be so happy to see those bathrooms remodeled!

The article by Michell-Miller -Carl called it recreation park If it usually goes by Chana then why not make it official. Call it Chana Park off Drycreek. Most people know where Drycreek is. Hardly anyone including both my sons along with 2 grandsons graduated from Placer. I have been in Auburn over 40 years. How long does it take to be a local Nieve-Joyce :) I bet you must be a real old timer. Really have fun.

Give this link a try----- http://www.auburnrec.com/facilities.htm

It should help clarify which parks are which and their locations. My family has given our own "nicknames" to many of the locations through the years. We call Chana Park the "duck pond" for it's once beautiful collections of ducks & geese.

Enjoy the locations for what they are: peace, serenity, escapes and now soon to be beautifully renovated!
