Pitbulls bred
to be mean
Reader Input
Everyone knows that pitbull dogs were bred to be mean and vicious as other dogs were bred for other things: lap dogs, hunting dogs, sheep dogs, etc. Pitbull owners admit they are vicious by saying if brought up right they can be trained otherwise. Now let’s change things. What would pitbull dog lovers clamor for – if four young men with points on baseball bats attack a pitbull so that there were many puncture wounds and stitches needed? Then they would really howl. I am for banning the breed, also breed mixes. QUINTIN BOHNET, Auburn

Ban em dano!
so.... pit bull dogs, if brought up right, can be trained to be gentle? But if four men beat them with pointed baseball bats they will howl.
.
I see.
.
Any dog can be trained to be aggressive. It appears that Quintin was bred to be ignorant.
Skeptic,
I think the writer was making a reference to the four pit bulls that attacked JoJo, and trying to make a comparison if a pit bull were attacked and injured in the same way. What would a pit bull lover do if their dog had that many puncture wounds and needed stitches? What would they want to happen to the perpetrators?
I for one would like to see a decision made about this case, so we can all move on.
Skeptic,
You've been up too late again. That isn't what Quintin is saying, but you get an "A" for creative writing. ;-)
But I do agree with the point you've made several times in the past, that it would be very difficult to put an outright ban on "Pitbulls" because there are so many variations of the breed that it would be impossible to define "what" exactly one is.
An attempt at an outright ban would turn into a "tail-chasing" exercise, at best.
Greenbeans, and others: Moving on from here will be difficult. Perhaps it will be when "pit" haters learn to stiffle their negativity and allow the rest of of us to love and enjoy our dogs. I doubt that will happen soon, I suspect the vitriol will continue long into the night. And for the "pit/dog" lovers, keep your dogs properly fenced and on leashes. Sorry about JoJo,...and other victums as well, but fences, leashes and respopnsible owners would have made this constant and apparently never ending subject a nonissue. New laws and hard feelings will simply deepen the chasim and perpetuate this useless diatribe.
JonGreen- Couldn't have said it better
I can imagine someone breeding a pitbull to be curious, but I cannot imagine why someone would breed them to be mean.
JonGreen, great point!!!!!! This B.S. is getting old!!! *****BAN IGNORANCE*****
Jab1pc:
I don't hate pit bulls, or any other breeds. I deplore irresponsible owners, and that is the whole crux of the matter here. If they throw the book at the bozo who (by his omissions) allowed his dogs to attack and seriously injure an innocent person, AND they strictly enforce the laws already on the books, then maybe this will all settle down. To me, it's not about pit bulls at all.
If people want to have a pit bull, then they have to be ready for the challenge of a strong dog who needs a lot of training.
I agree with you that a responsible owner would have made this a non-issue, because the attack would not have happened.
Greenbeans: On all counts, I believe we're on the same page, thanks for the responding. My comment was, for the most part, about how difficult it will be to move on. Damage has been done, sides have been taken. I am personally no longer at center, as I wish to be. As it dies down, perhaps to that I can return. I believe oscillating about center is healthy, whether it be dogs or politics or what ever else. Moderation (read center) is good, fringe sucks. I've seen alot of fringe lately...not happily!

A4T
...and you're an illiterate buffoon, so I guess that makes it even.
A4T- consider a remedial vocabulary class and attend on the same day as your anger management class. Both should help you be more creative in the name calling process, probably a bit more entertaining and probably easier to live with. Most finally it should help you be more sociable during Monday's peace march as you and Skept skip down High Street singing and holding hands in a show of unity and joy.
fiisherman: a bit off post but awesome, is it really this coming Monday, I guess I need to check my calender and join the world. I hope to be there marching with, OK supporting Veterans For Peace, because I don't have the courage to march with and endure the crap that will surely entail
Dogs are instinctive predators when raised in a pack and allowed to wander as a pack (don't forget the case Cora Suehead; those dogs didn't just bite her and she died...).
Cats are also instinctive predators and if my house kittie weighed 140 lbs, I would be his mouse. I am not any kind of expert on animals or breeds, but it would seem that if a person chooses to raise multiple dogs, they have a responsibility to control their animals and how they are raised. The owners of these animals should be held accountable. I would imagine that if a person raised any type of dog to be aggressive and protective....they have created a threat to our local community.
