Ditch daylight saving time
Reader Input
I am sitting here at 8:12 p.m. and decided I can’t go to bed yet as my inner clock is telling me to wind down but the clock says it’s only 8:30 p.m. Why do we Californians have to have daylight saving time? It costs companies lots of money to change their systems and some of the employees will probably be late. Plus, many churches are half-filled Sunday mornings when the time changes. I am a senior citizen and it takes me exactly one year to adjust to the new time. Then they go and change it again. I heard about a wise old Indian chief who said, “Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom and have a longer blanket.” Isn’t that the truth? Let’s complain to our politicians that it is time to save money, not time. Ruth Smith, Auburn

Ruth, eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired, don't pay so much attention to the clock and be grateful for today. Get your clock fixed too. If you are sitting there at 8:12 but the clock says it's 8:30, you might want to have it looked at.
Ruth, I have to agree with rolandmc. You like myself are probably retired, so time should be of no consequence to either one of us. Like roland says, I eat when I'm hungry, quit when I'm full, go to bed when I'm sleepy and wake up when I've had enough sleep.
When I do wake up, I open my eyes and if I see the ceiling I thank the Lord he has given me another day of life so that I can aggravate some more people.
Sit back, relax and enjoy life, quit looking at the clock.
Not everyone is retired, and let's face it, the world does run by the clock. I've been griping about Daylight Savings Time for years. The whole premise that it saves energy is ridiculous. People have to get up in the dark and turn on the lights to get ready for work. It was instituted in the 1970's when not as many women worked outside the home. But now, it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. Only the government would think this is a good idea.
They have done studies that there are more highway accidents, less workplace productivity, and more on the job accidents right after a time change. It makes sense, people are fatigued, and like Ruth, their bodies are not adjusted to the sudden change.
Do away with DST, and let the seasons change as they are meant to.
On the list of things I worry about this fits somewhere between global warming, save the fish, banning pit bulls, and reforming health care.
Jon,
You forgot to mention "naming Shockley Park".
Keep daylight savings year round - lets take a vote, I'm betting I am with the majority on this one - not to mention I lost the remote to my VCR and can't figure out how to change the time on the clock!
mfgcontroversy,
So, where do you stand, exactly, on this topic? Are you for or against keeping Daylight Savings Time?
Personally, I like it.
I like being able to get up in the morning and have the sun come up between 6:0A and 6:30A.
I'm one of those people who work until the sun goes down, so I appreciate being able to conclude the work day around 5:0P.
If enough people despise DLST so much, and complain loudly enough that the fickle politicians who scratch desperately every waking moment of every day to come down on the side of public opinion that will garner the most votes at election time, ever decide that ditching DLST is "good" for Californians, then I'll simply make a few minor adjustments to my lifestyle and move on.
I'm betting Ruth is a pretty interesting lady!!!! (I wish we had DST all year round.)
DST, was started for the following reasons:
1. Save energy------ wonder how that worked out?
2. Make it safer for our children to go to school during light time hours..... geeze school starts around 8am and is let out between 3 and 3:30 pm.... so DST makes no sense to me it should be done away with.
I wonder if Obama can fix this problem?
the biggest contributors of money to institute and maintain DST are sporting goods manufacturers...they want working people to have lots of daylight after the end of their work days in summer so they will spend money on recreational equipment.
just put it one way or the other. AND LEAVE IT.
I don't understand the "employees will probably be late" part, that sounds like a sentence that would be marked down in an English course. Though I do not work on Sunday, I don't see how it would have made me late. In fact, I woke up early on Sunday when the time changed last.
Ben Franklin started DST. Maybe we should change the name of Franklin Elementary School.
Leave the time alone! This is such a lame process and for what???? Do away with DST.
There are celestial reasons for DST as Greg pointed out. The hours of sunlight can be utilized for job efficiency. Plus children are out when the sun is out.
When I worked I enjoyed DST, it would allow me to do the chores after work during the week and I could play on the weekends. Everyone I hang around with feels the same way.
