49er U14 Chickens Rise to the Top!
On paper the two best teams in the girls A and B brackets for District 6 are the 49er Kickin Chickens and the Solano Strikers. As of this past weekend both were undefeated, and both had allowed only 2 goals in 6 regular season games. "This was the biggest game we have played this season. We have come up a little short against lesser teams but we really wanted to show we belong in the A bracket," said Head Coach Russ Klug.
After almost 10 minutes it was clear this was the toughest competition the Chickens have faced all year. "We were on our heals a little bit, we were not first to the ball. We were even a little tentative. Overall we were a smaller team, but we are fast, physical and have a deep roster," said Asst Coach Bruce Mitchell.
A quick transition to offense as the ball came across the midline to Macaylea "Squirt" led to a through ball being played to Madison "Dun Dun" who finished the first goal of the game. "That goal was key. We had some opportunites up top, but we were also giving up chances at our end of the field. It was very good we scored first," said Klug.
Minutes later "Squirt" pushed the ball down the left sideline pulling a couple of defenders to her before sending a cross to "Dun Dun" who was one on one, and again buried the ball in the back of the net.
The final score of this game was 3 to 2 with many opportunities on both sides. It was the most competitive contest the Chickens have played. Scoring first, and multiple times was critical in this outcome. Both teams were evenly matched and will be favorites come post season time.
Highlights for the Chickens;
(3) Goals for Madison "Dun Dun" (2) assists from Macaylea "Squirt" (1) assist from Emily Klug
Defensively the Chickens defenders stood tough in the face of a very talented offense from the Strikers, and T Rex once again came up with some super saves at goal........
Congratulations Kickin Chickens for making it to the top of the U14 Girls in District 6! Now lets stay there!
