FLC denied playoff berth
BOYS SOCCER
By Journal Sports Staff

Forest Lake Christian School’s boys soccer team came up just short of a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth.

The Falcons lost their final regular-season match 2-1 to Vacaville Christian on Monday in Lake of the Pines. Had FLC won, it would have clinched second place in the Central Valley Christian League and gone on to the postseason.

Instead, Vacaville Christian will be the CVCL’s No. 2 representative in the playoffs. Forest Lake, meanwhile, finishes the season in third place in the CVCL at 3-4-2 (5-9-5 overall).

“It was a little disappointing,” FLC coach Thad Kopec said. “We did get beat by a better team tonight.”

Junior forward Randy Van Winkle scored the Falcons’ lone goal on Monday, gathering in a 90-yard kick off the foot of senior goalkeeper Aaron Andersson and poking it into the corner of the net.

That goal tied the match at 1-1. The score stayed that way until a Vacaville Christian player headed in a cross in the second half.

El Dorado 5, Colfax 0 at Placerville — The Falcons’ season ended with a shutout loss.

Senior forward Steven Smith and junior midfielder Michael Manning drew praise from Colfax coach Robert Ruzette for their all-around play. Senior sweeper Trent Sosbee and junior stopper Brady Thomas stood out defensively.

Colfax finishes its season at 12-11-1 overall and 6-6 in Pioneer Valley League play.
