More police after speeders
$500K grant aims to reduce driving accidents
By Jenifer Gee Journal Staff Writer

Speedy drivers beware: For the next year local cops will saturate the area for motorists driving faster than the limit.

With the help of a $587,280 grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, the Auburn highway patrol office will pay for officers to work overtime on weekends to curb speeding on major Placer County roadways.

The Auburn CHP office will also work with CHP offices in Grass Valley, Gold Run and Yuba-Sutter as well as Auburn, Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville police departments to patrol major roadways.

Starting this weekend, extra officers will work on overtime paid for through the grant to supplement work of patrol officers working on their regular schedule.

“The whole purpose of this is to reduce the number of victims injured in speed-caused collisions in the Auburn area,” said CHP spokesman David Martinez. “Our goal is to have zero fatalities between now and next year.”

Martinez said officers will focus on motorists driving on Interstate 80, highways 49 and 65 as well as Sierra College and Douglas boulevards, and Baseline and Auburn-Folsom roads.

Officers will also look out for any seatbelt violations.

“Excessive speed consistently causes a disproportionately large share of collisions,” said CHP Capt. Bill Donovan, commander of the Auburn Area office. “Enforcement efforts will specifically be targeted at reducing fatality and injury collisions.”

What lousy timing. If people slow down on Auburn-Folsom road, the number of deer being killed by cars every hour will probably go way down. How will this affect the status of the shots-for-tots Kiddie Kill? My little 8 year-old Trevor has a strong personality and insists on having his way. He already opened his Christmas presents, including his new .30-06 automatic big game rifle with night vision scope and lazer sight. He's been practicing on the neighbor's weather vane and seems to have improved his accuracy. I feel he's safe to hunt in a residential neighborhood now. I can't imagine what he'll do if the hunt is cancelled. He's killed lots of songbirds, rabbits, and domestic pets...but I want him to feel the joy of killing something bigger than he is. Something that can take several bullets while running and bleeding before giving up the final minutes of its life. He's very smart. While describing how he wanted to "kill something big", he said, "little animals die way too quick. He's so excited about this hunt. And he idolizes Kirk Uhler.

Hey nicklbag, you need to lay off buying your "nickel bags" of crack. It's frying your brain cells (what few brain cells you have left).

What a waste of money. The CHP is camped out on the Clipper Gap exit 365 days a year handing out tickets, evidently without overtime. Only someone who really isn't paying attention could get a speeding ticket on Hwy 80.

"Speedy drivers beware: For the next year local cops will saturate the area for motorists driving faster than the limit. "

So they havent been already? With fewer miles being driven, more revenue needs to be generated it appears, what a waste of our taxpayer dollars...

Another boost to commerce & tourism in Auburn and the surrounding areas!

We have to quit spending tax payer money every time someone "thinks" they have a good idea. Without getting into the specific pro's and con's of this program. We already have a Highway Patrol, local Sheriff's and Police. We have speed limits. The State budget is a wreck. Just yesterday we were focused on cuts to local essential safety services, now, a story about a $587K grant for overtime to write nuisance traffic tickets. If you don't see a problem here, I encourgage you to look and think beyond what seems obvious at the surface.

So remember folks, if you're going to speed like a maniac, do it before the weekend kicks in.

why not spend the money to hire new officers and regularly patrol?

Auburnite. There's a reason you are unemployed. You're an idiot. Shut up and go get a job. It's obvious you are a hater. I notice you don't comment on the other stories about detectives cracking theft rings, the wonderful job firefighters did at the 49er fire, etc. PS, mcdonald is hiring. Quit collecting the government check that I pay with on my tax dollars and get a job. Stop being a leech. I'm tired o working so you can stay home and play X-box.

The government does good in some areas and wastes money in others. That's why people complain that spending OVERTIME pay to cite speeders and spend 587 MILLION dollars. What else could we do with that money? Well, we could pay for needy people's operations so they don't die. We could keep libraries open to make people smarter. We could feed homeless (or recently foreclosed upon) and keep them alive in winter. We could pay down our huge debt that's destroying our credit rating... or we could write tickets on overtime. I'm thinking the people behind this stupidity are just too dumb to be trusted with money.

They'd be better off pocketing the grant money and staying home. It'd be more income for the CHP that way and less harassment to the general population. Who puts these folks in charge of the grant money in power? Do the voters really want this?

Come you guys; This is bad money after more bad money. How many of the electorate was in favor of the last and present administration each heisting over 800 billion dollars out of the federal treasury, in order to improve the economy? Just think it was that heist that gave the CHP this 587 Million to pursue and even greater rape of the American taxpayer in California. The CHP is supposed to be protecting the public safety, they are not supposed to be revenuers or tax collectors. The speed limit has never been raised to the pre 1976 level on all roads since the national 55 MPH speed limit was eliminated, you don't suppose that was for the benefit of tax collection now do ya?

um, ok, so nicklbag is a nut.

While I appreciate the value of making sure roads are safe, I would much rather see this grant money go to busting up the meth houses in Placer County. They contribute significantly to the crime rate and to the diminished feelings of security for everyone else living here.

I live by Auburn- Folsom Road and for years I have been in contact with the CHP to increase patrols. I even told them I would give them permission to park a patrol car on the corner of my property. A-F has become a race track and the number of fatalities keeps mounting. I welcome any efforts to get the drivers to get back to sensible speeds.

HarleyRider is absolutely spot on :) It is funny when certain people only post on the topics that are advantageous to their view, and seem to "miss" the other stories that might look bad for them. Every time I see auburnite use a nazi metaphor when describing something he doesnt like, it just makes me cringe and wonder why somebody has such a limited vocabulary and can not seem to offer any real solutions. Auburnite is the same guy that called the proposed hotel near bowman the "brown shirt inn". I take it he is not a student of history, and me being a history major can tell you that any time somebody brings up "brown shirts" or "nazi" in the context of a current political conversation, they are not to be taken seriously and can go back to watching glenn beck and cowering in fear in front of their tv sets.

I drive a lot all over CA, and I think Auburn drivers are remarkably good drivers. Better than Grass Valley and way better than Roseville.

Harleyrider is once again spot-on. The vast majority of those posting here ARE IDIOTS. Allow me to try and edumacate you people: if speeding wasn't such a huge problem, then there would be no need for a grant for the CHP to pay O.T. to officers to enforce a non-existant problem. Grant monies can only be used for specific reasons, and in this case, speed enforcement. The money can't be handed out to those who feel that they're entitled to a free handout or to be used to support socialist agendas like all you whine-babies think should be done with the grant monies. It seems that the criminals of our society protest the loudest when they feel threatened or think that they'll be caught doing something illegal (in this case speeders and the act of speeding). If you people don't violate the speed laws, then you don't have anything to worry about, right? But if you're the type that think our roadways are your own private speedways, then I surely hope you DO get caught speeding and you get cited for the exact speed you get caught doing. No breaks for you! And while people are being stopped for speeding hopefully they'll wind up arresting more drunks, more dopers and sending parolees back to prison for violations that they find while being stopped for speeding. So my question to all you whiners out there is: do you want French-cries with your Waaburger?

HELL YA!!! put more cops out to saturate us and hand out more tickets that are $300 plus YA!! I love it...

with all the revenue from the tickets the grant amount will be small potatoes. the main reason is the feds helping the local government with money problems.

We need to wake up and see that we are being squeezed for all wealth in this transition to a world government.

Maybe they won't have to sit on the on-ramp at Placer Hills Road with the plane up trying to fill the coffers by revenuing. I don't live close to that speed trap but I do travel through that area and it has been nothing more then just that a speed trap for years. If you know anyone living in Meadow Vista just ask them about it. A friend of mine that lives out there makes sure to tell me to be careful and not go 67 miles per hour or I'll get a ticket, he has. I have counted 12 CHP units at that on-ramp at one time.

Normally an area of road is monitored if there are numerous wrecks. I would love to see the numbers between Applegate and Dry Creek Rd. that has lead to the heavy enforcement. You won't see those numbers as it would be self incriminating for the CHP.

Under the current National government they seem to have billions of dollars to hand out. We need to replace all of them.

You keep worrying about man made global warming and nationalized health care, that is what they want you to do, as it keeps the heat off of them.

Nicklbag, I coughed some fluid up through my nose while reading your post and have wasted a perfectly good glass of wine. I will forgive that. I heard there are some bears in that area that seem pretty good at taking bullets. Perhaps Trevor can shoot down one of the cubs while it clings to lower branches of the tree, scared and shaking, it's only crime being a hungry bear in a residential neighborhood full of chickens, garbage cans and dog food. Make sure you teach him not to waste any of the parts...

Tackleberry...on point there regarding grant use.

As for increased enforcement, statistics are clear on the matter: areas that recieve higher traffic enforcement action see a decrease in other crime. I welcome the increased staffing, OT or no OT. Not too mention, those that think 85 on the freeway in traffic is a safe speed clearly need to bone up on their basic Issac Newton physics. Newton is not your friend when the car ahead of you suddenly brakes to avoid the deer running from Niklbag's crazy kid.

Schrodscat , please post the statistics showing there has been a rise in traffic accidents in the last year in the patrol area defined by the grant...
