A Republican, A Libertarian, A Democrat, And A Green Walk Into A Bar... (Pt. 2)
Vote Randy 2012

I spent yesterday at Placer High School for the "Rock the Vote" campaign. I don't think I need to explain it too much because I covered this ground last week. (see: last week)

I enjoyed fielding questions from the students in regards to political policy (see Socrates: corrupting the youth) as well as giving my own opinion when asked. I did find, as I suspected, that all four representatives, as well as the students, really want the same thing... a more democratic, consistent, and transparent government that truly meets the needs of the people. We all have differing thoughts on how to accomplish this goal... but in the end we all want what's best.

I encourage the younger folks to run for office themselves. To get the old guard out and get some new ideas in.... God knows the old ones have had their chance.

Suffice to say:

Thank you, seniors of Placer High. I appreciate the chance to come to your school and take time out of your already busy day to talk to you about registering yourselves to vote. However you vote and with whomever you register with... the important thing is to vote.

Del Oro was pretty cool last week... but you guys were awesome.

Peace,

Birch Bricker - the Green Party Guy

Socrates: Remember....Hemlock is poison!

ref: Steve Martin, SNL "Hemlock is Poison" skit

Birch: Thanks for your efforts in trying to get our kids interested in voting. I only hope that they can gain the concept of how important it is to vote and to let their voice be heard... well at least at the ballot box. Their is nothing worse in my opinion then sitting on the sidelines complaining how the game is being played, when you can get in the game and possible make a difference.

I would vote for Randy Marsh lol

Birch, thank you for participating in this very valuable program. You are right, we need new blood and a lot of changes, most notably a hard turn for the better in the ethics department.

Hopefully this new batch of voters uses their brain power to get familiar with the issues and candidates and votes based on their decision and not the last 30 second Political Advertisement they saw before heading to the polls.

Thanks again.

Maybe I will show up to the high schools next year supporting the "Constitution" Party.

Randy voted for Obama. http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/209729/?searchterm=About+Last+Night...

Yosemite,

Constitution party? A more appropriate name would be the "Protectionist Jesus" party.

Some gems from their website:

"We favor a moratorium on immigration to these United States" (yes, a ,moratorium on legal immigration.)

"We shall call upon the President, and Congress, to terminate United States membership in the United Nations"

"the true nature of sex created by God for the procreative union between one man and one woman in the holy bonds of matrimony" (so these guys oppose non-procreative sex between one man and one woman in the holy bonds of matrimony.)

"We acknowledge the blessing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as Creator, Preserver and Ruler of the Universe and of these United States." (Jesus is the ruler of the USA?)

Just where in the Constitution does it say that Jesus is the ruler of the US? Wouldn't establishing Jesus as the ruler of the US be a contradiction with the second amendment?

JP: "Wouldn't establishing Jesus as the ruler of the US be a contradiction with the second amendment"

Are you suggesting that Jesus does not have the right to keep and bear arms?

If you meant to say 1st amendment, Only if the government mandated it. If a group agrees on that principle, that does not contradict with the US Constitution.

Its kind of like the Democrats thinking that abortion should be available on demand and government funded does not make it constitutional.

What I really hope these young folks find a way to learn is the difference between politics and governance and the difference between information and useless rhetoric. They certainly won't get it from most media outlets including political blogs.

Yosemite,

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking.. I meant to say the establishment clause.

JP: heh heh.. i figured.

Voter: I totally agree. I told them that there's no way I, or any other person that was there, can give then all the facts in the short time we had. For myself... I wasn't trying to sell them a used car like one of the other adults was. I told them what I wrote in the blog, "However you vote and with whomever you register with... the important thing is to vote."

Yosemite: The Board of Elections only takes political parties that are on the ballot... not write-ins. The Constitution Party isn't on the ballot. You can start to get signatures to get them on the ballot now - maybe by spring things will have changed.

Joszef: Did you see the new South Park last night? The one about whaling? The ending was soooo funny.

Josef - I wish Jesus were the ruler of the United States :-)

Yosemite - Jesus does have a sword. It is his word :-)

Birch - The irony of last night's South Park was while extremely funny...so revealing about the foolish self-justification we have about what we think. I have come to see South Park in a new light. Matt & Trey have a wonderful way of showing us how silly we are :-)

South Park is one of the best shows on TV because it is willing to make fun of every belief/idea/ideal out there (usually ridiculous ones). It is actually a very political show (well mostly politically incorrect). If you enjoy obnoxious humor then give South Park a try.

skimammoth: Did you see last nights?

yeah- it was pretty entertaining.

JP's mixing up of the establishment clause and the second ammendment aside -- WOULD Jesus be a gun rights supporter? Just a thought.

Marginal - I think Jesus wouldn't have answered the gun issue. He probably would have followed it with some parable to make people think or a question that would have stumped those around him

Birch,

Thanks for speaking with the students in our high schools. Your time with them I am certain furthered their education. Thanks for your time and Del Oro is a wonderful school as is Placer.

Jim McCaully and Ryan Ronco have done a great job of voter outreach. They also sponsor a candidates training session to assist folks who are thinking about running for office. They explain all the hoops one has to jump through to become a candidate.

Fedallah: Del Oro is a fine school... I went to Placer... then Chana. Therefore Chana is actually the "awesomest" school, in my eyes. :)

Jon: I agree that Jim McCaully has done a great job with this program. I can't remember what the numbers were before the voter outreach started but I do know that we now have something like 73% of 18-21 year olds voting. This, up from somewhere around 10% before it started.

I worked for Jim McCaully and Ryan Ronco some years back and I have always seen them as passionate-about-elections-matters. We appear to be very lucky to have them running our local Elections Office. Keep up the good work guys!
