Doolittle sets low standard
Reader Input
I am not at all surprised to find local Republican leaders like Tom Hudson rushing to the defense of former Congressman John Doolittle as he is named a co-conspirator in the Kevin Ring trial (Journal, Sept. 29). They remind me of those servile Republicans of earlier years shouting “Support Our President” as Nixon’s White House came crashing down around him. It is undesirable that the investigation surrounding Doolittle has dragged on so long, but a delayed investigation does not necessarily mean one is innocent. We should keep in mind a number of established facts pertaining to Doolittle’s conduct over the years regardless of the current investigation. 1. While a state legislator, Doolittle was one of a very few ever to be fined the maximum amount by the state Fair Political Practices Committee for improper campaign practices. 2. As a congressman, he took many thousands in campaign contributions from later convicted felon Jack Abramoff, to the extent that he referred to himself as an “Abramoff subsidiary.” While other congressmen accepted large sums from Abramoff, every one except for Doolittle returned the money! 3. This same Abramoff also hired Doolittle’s wife, Julie, to work in his office. For this she was paid almost $100,000, and it is still unclear exactly what she did for that money. 4. There are very strict laws against candidates making personal use of campaign contributions, but Doolittle got around that by calling his wife his “consultant,” thereby raking off over 15 percent of his huge campaign contributions for their personal use. No other legislator has ever done so. Doolittle continues to repeat “I have done nothing wrong.” Even if Doolittle never spends a day in prison, he set a new low standard of integrity for legislators for the entire nation he claims to love. You must have a very sad, bitter life William.
"but a delayed investigation does not necessarily mean one is innocent."
Nor does an investigation necessarily mean one is guilty.
In fact, in our great country, one is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
I realize in your fascist little mind, anyone you disagree with politically is guilty of a crime. You should be happy that those who disagree with Obama do not automatically take the same position. We may challenge his policies, and even his proof of citizenship, but we presume he is innocent until that proof becomes established in a court of law.
As I said, you must have a very sad, bitter life.
So by certain standards anyone who lists the truth about Doolittle's actions or the current Republican Joel Anderson money laundering scandal and Doolittle's impending indictment and his sorry behavior foisted on his constiuents here in Placer County must " have a very sad, bitter life".
This leap is anything but logic and reason. The attempt by ANYONE to excuse alleged criminality by attacking anyone who brings up the issues must conversely mean the defender has a very happy, sweet life. Does Y-S seemingly have a very happy sweet life? He must if we use his unlogic to again obfuscate the obvious.
William a few notable flaws in your LTE:
You forgot a important word in your first sentence regarding Doolittle C0-Conspirator... like the word UN-Indicted Co- conspirator... funny how a little word makes a difference in a sentence?
Julie never worked in Abramoffs office. She was a consultant to Abramoff and had her own office.
Doolittle hired is wife as a 'Consultant' maybe true but I recall 60 minutes a few years ago did a story on our elected officials and how many of them 'Hired' their wives to work for them... turned out almost all elected officials on either side of the aisles hired their spouses.
I do not know if Doolittle is guilty of any crimes or not, but just post facts when you talk about someone.
Doolitttle and his wife have not been charged with a crime. Ring's trial was declared a miss trial. No salmon will not mean the end of human life.
Congresswoman Matsui was hired by her husband.
Ah, yes... Doolittle and Matsui... "If we only promoted family values as often as we promote family members.” (see: nepotism)
Birch, When I was much younger, I thought nepotism was a really bad thing. Now I think that in some circumstances it's not so bad. Here are some examples.
1. A small business that employees family members.
2. A small business that hires the relatives of good employees who tend to share the same work ethic of the employee.
3. A politician that hires a family member to work on their campaign.
Bad nepotism
1. A politician or government official that contracts or awards a bid to a family member to do work other than political campaigning i.e. build a road, etc.
Jon: Thanks for talking down to me. I appreciate that. Now that you've put me in my place I will be quiet and listen to the wisdom of the older sages. By all means... continue...
Fedallah, this impending indictment you talk about and have been for quite some time, do you know when is it going to come about? If it never happens and you live to be 100 will you ever retract your statement?
I don't like Doolittle any more than you do but you, C-R and most of the extreme zealots in Placer's Democratic party seem to be unnaturally obsessed with him. You are going to get an ulcer if you already haven't. And what's happening with Jennifer Montgomery, she seems to have fallen in step with the rest of the Republican boys in the BOS. Terrible disappointment, at least for me.
loomisresident,
Do you have any way to back up your assertions? So, what is the DOJ's timetable on the Doolittle indictments?
It's compassionate of you to show concern for Fedallahs health. I'm sure he appreciates it.
I merely continue to correct all the blatant lies the Republican Party continues in their cover up of how much the ex Representative Doolittle stole from the taxpayer in cooperation with Karl Rove and Dick "Halliburton" Cheney.
Since Doolittle hand picked his carpetbagging successor, McCarpetbagger of the Ventura County Family of Per Diems, and said person's staff is using HIS old office, running his old playbook, taking money from his old donors, and continuing to be a force for evil in the world, I will continue to do so.
Not everybody just rolls over and begs people to keep stealing from them. It's a complex subject, and I'm sure some of the perverts will continue to focus on things like other people's sex lives, and who can out- Klan the next candidate, and who can privatize what school next, and how the rich should never pay taxes, but somebody has to do it.
Now boy's, let's not talk so bad about Mr. Doolittle, he is such a wonderful man. He has such high standards and sets a perfect example of all republicans that hold an office.
By all means the man is innocent until proven guilty. The Court of public opinion has a hung jury. I wouldn't say Doolittle set a new low for integrity. Every day we see the bar lowered, lower and lower. He was an Amateur.
Anyone care to look at Obama's appointments and use of the White House to repay donors and bundlers?
What is that? Do I hear crickets?
Birch, Didn't mean to sound like I was talking down to anyone. When I was younger I also liked Herb Caen and then I got older and didn't like his politics. When I was younger I thought all nepotism was bad, now I don't think all of it is bad.
You don't hear crickets, you hear the rocks rattling around in your head.
What the h--- is Doolittle running for now? Did Spiro Agnew appoint him to something? Maybe he'll make a movie or appear on TV shows like "Rod" Blagojevich. Take a deep breath, sit back and what shall be shall be in this individuals future.
Does Doolittle matter now? He's not our rep. Who the f**k cares? We've got enough troubles with McClintock as our rep. now.
Jon: As you are a member of one of the groups that supports nepotism... I'm not at all surprised you'd have no problem with it.
How much longer are we going to beat up Doolittle. We should all be happy he's gone, at least, I am.
Skeptic, the assertions you refer to I must assume are in relation o my comment on Montgomery. Just look at her voting record. Do you see any difference between her votes and those of the Republican boys? I don't, not enough to say she is the guiding light.
I don't have a clue about the DOJ timetable, do you? Come on, you're much better than this shoot and hide type of post.
By the way, I've known McClintock since 1984 when he first ran for office in Ventura County. he, like all human beings, has his good and bad points. Politically I'm at odds with him probably 50% of the time, fiscally he does much better in my book, ethically he does much worse in my opinion.
I guess the main difference between you, the LTE author and me is that I live in the present and look to the future, the past is gone and other than learn from it, it's best forgotten if it was not the best
Now, if Birch ran for Congress next time, you bet i would vote for him instead of McClintock and Brown, neither one was worth of my vote in the last election. hey, I just found another difference between you and me, I'm not married to any political party or official party doctrine.
Loomis: I'd only run if I could fill some of the other posts with my family members. :)
Birch, At least you could trust your family members and would have intimate knowledge of their skill levels.
This is as pathetic as someone writing in about Bill Clinton. It’s time to move on. Bill Clinton continues to push the “unethical” envelope.” Doolittle has never been indicted. Get a life.
