A jury declared Tuesday that a Penryn man is guilty of torturing and murdering his cousin.

Donald Hugh Sherman, 44, was found guilty of first-degree murder and torture in the September 2006 death of his cousin, Reno resident Guy Farmer.

The jury also found Sherman guilty of a possession of a controlled substance for sale with a special finding of being armed with a firearm.

The jury also found true two special allegations that Farmer’s murder was intentional and inflicted with torture and murder was inflicted with the use of poison.

Additionally, Sherman was found guilty on nine counts of a former felon in possession of a firearm.

Sentencing for Sherman is scheduled for Nov. 30 in a yet-to-be-assigned Placer County courtroom.

He and Reno resident Peter Daniel Schoemig, 32, were tried together in front of two separate juries during a three-month trial.

Closing arguments for Schoemig’s case are expected to end Thursday and the jury is scheduled to begin deliberations soon after.

See Thursday’s Journal for a complete story on the jury’s verdict for Sherman.

I am not sure if anybody has read the details of this case from previous stories, but this guy is absolutely disgusting and I am very glad he has been found guilty. His level of callousness is beyond description and I wont even bother to describe his crimes. Sometimes it is hard to have faith in the justice system, but this is something that can give us all a little faith that justice is still be served well. Amen!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I spent several months outta my life on that jury...and was lucky enough to have a good group of people with me. (Including our 3 alternates, even though they did'nt get to deliberate with us....they were with us through the whole trial and they were awesome!) Anyways, we all know we did the right thing and we are so relieved that it's over! Thanks for the support!

I too was on this jury. I feel we provided at least a small amout of solice to the victims family. I feel honored to have been brought together with my citezen co-jurors. All of whom I will remember always.

I'd like to thank the jury for their time and fortitude in this case. Just reading the articles was more than I wanted to know about how my brother died. I'm just sorry the other two defendants cut a deal and plead guilty to a reduced sentence. Again, thank you to all involved in bringing about a conviction.

Guy Farmer was no pillar of society either, this man had spent years in Pelican Bay with the worst of the worse. Guy was a white supremicist and was traveling down a road in his life that he would have either ended up back in prison or worse.

Yes, my brother "was no pillar of society either" as you put it, but lets get some truth out there.

1 He spent time at Pelican Bay for shooting some one that pulled a gun on him and tried to rob him.

2 "White supremicist" Guy was part native american and both of his children have more native blood than he did, one being 5/8 native.

3 Going back to prison, what could be worse? Being beaten, tortured and murdrered by a member of your family, I think that is what this is all about.

I have just one thought...What if this was your brother, and your cousin not only killed him but tortured him. I knew Guy from a very young age and I will tell you that he was a strong lover of all people, and once a friend always a friend. Yes he had his moments but don't we all? we may pick different ways of acting out but NO one deserves to be hurt in the ways these animals did to my friend. R.I.P. Guy
