Auburn man ‘critical’ after falling 60 feet
Crews hike in to perform cliffside rescue
By Jenifer Gee Journal Staff Writer

An Auburn area man was in critical condition after he fell 60 feet off a cliff in Foresthill.

Citing medical privacy laws, officials said they could not release the name of the 50-year-old man who was airlifted out of a meadow about 500 feet from where he plunged to the rough terrain below.

The man was reportedly clearing land on property located off Baltimore Mine Road in Foresthill Friday morning.

At about 8:20 a.m., 911-dispatch center received a call that a man had fallen off a cliff.

When emergency responders arrived, they initially saw the man standing up and he could talk to personnel, according to Lt. Robert Sinetos with the Foresthill Fire Protection District.

However, as time wore on, the man’s condition “deteriorated,” Sinetos said.

Emergency crews hiked down to the man and had to use chainsaws to cut through thick brush, Sinetos said.

Sinetos estimated that the man fell 60 vertical feet and then tumbled an additional 40 feet down the side of the cliff wall.

Once emergency crews reached the patient, ambulance technicians stabilized him and prepared him to be lifted via helicopter.

At about 10:30 a.m. a California Highway Patrol helicopter let out a long line and the man was pulled up out of the canyon.

He was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center to treat suspected spinal and pelvic injuries, Sinetos said.

Sinetos said the man and two other coworkers were clearing land for a future commercial building site when a tree fell and knocked the 50-year-old man off the cliff.

If this person was involved in a vehicle crash, his name would have probably been released. Why is falling off a cliff different? I don't really want to know who it is, but the logic applied here doesn't make sense.

Ouch.

Another reason why putting retirement subdivisions in mountain goat terrain "might" not be such a great idea unless you want a high turnover rate.....

fuhreg, it's just an excuse the A-J is using for blacking out other news.

You know it really is no one's business who this man is. I just so happen to know him personally and I don't think that any of you commenter's realize how scary this was for his family and friends. So I suggest that you think about people's privacy for just a second before you try to get in their business. This is not about a man who was doing something to hurt the community it was something that could have ended tragically. Luckily for him and all of those who love him he is just fine and didn't sustain any broken bones or internal injuries. He is going to be fine. He was lucky.

Very scary! Glad to hear he will be okay.

My name is Jeni and I am the ex-wife of the man who fell... I just wanted to let everyone know that he is at home and amazingly he is doing well. Thanks for everyones support. He was bruised and banged up pretty good but someone was on his side.

I would just like to thank the Foresthill Fire Protection District for their swift actions that day. Also there is a little thing called HEPA law that restricts the amount of personal information that is given out. Also it is up to the responding agency and LT Sinetos as to how much info is released, Thanks LT. Sinetos!

thelilprincess: Too many busy-bodies around here...no crime committed...no name neccessary.

jenirae: Glad to know he's doing well...that's all that matters.

Glad that he will be fine....

PS... HEPA is a filter......HIPAA is what you mean right, about patient privacy.
