Donner gardeners preparing for sale Donner Garden Club of Auburn will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at 330 Shockley Road. Members are finalizing plans for the 54th annual chrysanthemum plant sale to to held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Veterans Memorial Hall, 100 East St., Auburn. There’s no charge to attend. The club is in need of bamboo stakes to secure the chrysanthemums that will be sold during the sale. Program on winter gardens planned Auburn Garden Club will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1279 High St., in Auburn. Pat Cotton-Rubin, former Sacramento Bee garden writer, will present a program on winter gardens. She will discuss plants that add interest during this quiet time of year in the garden. Everyone is welcome. Pumpkin carving class Saturday Children ages 7 to 12 will carve a pumpkin and make a home worm bin to recycle the guts after Halloween, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Roseville Utility Exploration Center, 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd., Roseville. Applicants sought for scholarships Auburn Garden Club, an established group in Auburn for more than 75 years, is once again offering $1,000 scholarships to qualifying Placer County graduating seniors and students enrolled in community college or university who are pursuing careers in horticultural or agricultural fields of study. The 2010 application can be obtained at www.auburngardenclub.org/Files/Grant_Application_10.pdf. Applications are due in April and will be awarded at the club’s June luncheon. Citrus talk set in Meadow Vista The Meadow Vista Garden Club’s monthly meeting will be Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Grange Hall in Meadow Vista. A brief business meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by lunch at noon. Featured speaker will be Ralene Snow, owner of Snow Citrus farm in Newcastle. Snow will discuss growing and producing gourmet citrus products. She’ll also bring along an orange cake for sampling. Visitors interested in becoming new members are welcome.
