Weidel on Wheels: SX4 offers solid bang for little buck
Having produced its share of forgettable subcompacts in a not so proud past -- remember the Esteem and Aerio? I didn’t think so -- the folks at Suzuki earned some esteem several years ago when unveiling the SX4. The introduction of the SX4 was just one more indication that Suzuki has become a more credible auto manufacturer, and is not just a Japanese company that specializes in motorcycles. Still, it’s not like the latest Suzuki subcompact sedan/hatchback is giving the competition any huge concerns. Yet the SX4 should at least be considered when looking for a small vehicle that’s good on gas, won’t cost a bundle and has some solid upside. While not quite a mini-sport utility vehicle, the all-wheel drive 2010 SX4 hatchback has a similar versatility that might appeal to car shoppers who are considering the usual suspects -- more heralded subcompacts such as the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Kia Spectra and Ford Focus. The other SX4 trims are all front-wheel drive. Criticized previously for its lack of power, the SX4 added seven more horsepower this year and is now packaged as a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder with 150 horsepower. While still a bit sluggish, the performance has improved, making the 6-speed manual transmission rather fun to drive at times. Although the lack of power is more pronounced in the continuously variable automatic (CVT), there are obvious traits that offset the somewhat sluggish vehicle. The SX4 possesses a tall cabin that provides considerable headroom even for tall folks. Legroom is not as generous in either the front or the backseat, yet the trunk space is sufficient in all models. What isn’t so appealing is the gas mileage, which runs a bit low (21 to 28 miles per gallon) for a subcompact. Another negative is the rear seats do not fold up and the interior is mostly hard plastic. But considering the price, which starts at around $13,500, the SX4 is a nice little bargain. The SX4 does receive high marks for ride quality and surpasses some of its more notable competitors in this area. The vehicle provides a firm stability, corners adequately and offers solid braking power. Like many subcompacts, it can be on the noisy side. __________ 2010 Suzuki SX4 Price: Starting at $13,500 Mileage estimate: 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway Power: 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower
