Superintendent claims picture painted is inaccurate
Colfax Elementary School Superintendent/Principal Jon Ray asserted Wednesday that the allegations raised by parents Monday night are unfounded. In an effort to “get to me,” he said, the credibility of Michelle Heimann, a longtime Colfax resident and supporter of the school district, has been destroyed. He believes some parents “have taken it to a different level because of decisions I’ve had to make that had nothing to do with Michelle, but had to do with their kids and program decisions.” Ray pointed out that Heimann had attended school in Colfax and had worked on behalf of the school district prior to obtaining her teaching credential from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She had served as president of the board of trustees and worked on behalf of last year’s bond measure seeking funds to update classrooms at the school. “She has dedicated her life to this community. Over the years, Michelle and I have worked very closely together – starting with the bond measure and all the public presentations we made,” Ray said. “In addition to growing in a professional relationship, our families grew very close.” Heimann stepped in last spring as a substitute for a seventh-grade class. When the position became open in the fall, she was one of 39 teachers to apply for the long-term substitute position. The unanimous decision to hire Heimann was made by a committee consisting of Ray, the school board member and a teacher. “For those parents to say she got that position because of our relationship is incredibly inappropriate,” Ray said. Heimann did not return phone calls or answer e-mails from the media. According to Ray, Heimann has gone in seclusion. Another substitute teacher has been hired to teach her class. Heimann’s teaching partner at Colfax Elementary, Mary Ann Hinrichs, said, “She shows a lot of integrity (as a teacher). She has been doing her best and never hesitates to come for help.” Hinrichs added that as a new teacher Heimann has done everything that needed to be done and beyond. “She’s also the girls’ basketball coach. She’s brought in art projects she’s done with both classes and has done three labs already (in six weeks). She’s been able to balance her teaching along with coaching. For a new teacher, it’s often hard to learn how to balance everything and do it well.” Ray said the allegations did not accurately portray what is going on at Colfax Elementary. “If you asked where the school was 2-1/2 years ago — the discipline problems and the morale of the staff – and where we are today, (I’d ask) what decisions have I ever been involved with or done that said this is what is best for the kids? “If they think I spent all those hours trying to pass bonds or those hours involved with the youth leagues or else involved with our sports programs because I was looking for personal glory, why would I be in Colfax,” he asked.

anyone else notice that the original story, called a scandal in the print edition, is no longer on this site? what happened to it and all of the comments?
My daughter Kelcey, is on the Colfax Elementary school basketball team, coached by Ms. Heiman and Mr. Ray. She has learned many new skills, respect for her team members and discipline to perform well in the sport. Both coaches worked well with the girls always exhibiting professional demeanor and school spirit that drove the girls to perform their best. I am thankful to both of them for how they enriched Kelcey's 6th grade experience and hope they will coach together again next year. These are the educators that we should be commending for giving so much of their time to our children. The auburn journal should be ashamed of spreading small town rumors.

So let me get this right...Ray and Heiman 'worked very closely together' on a professional level, their 'families grew very close' AND they coached basketball together. Now it comes out she is a first year teacher who got the position over 38 other teachers and there's no favoritism? How is it possible she was the most qualified? Sounds like Mr Ray is a good administrator who has very poor judgement when it comes to bringing his personal life on campus. BTW, did he have any comment on the post from a former student of hers that he and Heiman were often locked up in a classroom with the blinds closed during lunch? What 'example' his he setting for the students who seem to be so well aware of this inappropriate behavior? SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
Make all the assumptions you would like, but you cant pick apart what he said as "negative". They "worked very closely together", umm they have to in order to make the school a better place. Doesnt mean they are in a relationship. There "families grew close". Maybe they are friends outside of school and their families have made friends and enjoy kids playing, adults talking, etc....Why does it have to be anything else than that? They cant have a life outside of the school, if they arent being inappropriate, whats the problem?
Mrs. Heimann graduated from Colfax High, was on the basketball team at the high school and decided to want to teach in the town she grew up in. So maybe out of all the candidates, Mr. Ray decided to give her a shot when others didn't. Maybe he thought that someone who was raised here would understand the kids and area and be a better teacher? Also she was already a substitute on campus teaching a 7th grade class. The kids knew her, so why not keep her on board? The article does not say she was the "most quailified".
If Mr. Ray or Mrs. Heimann reads these comments, please know that the majority of parents are behind you and do not give up. I will support you. Dont let these disgruntled parents win. YOUR kids needs you!!!!!!!!
Kevin123- I've read all of your comments yesterday and this one today, and I really appreciate your perspective. You seem to be right on track when it comes to separating facts from rumors. Both of the Ray and Heimann families are living through this nightmare because people who do not know both sides of the story are making unexcusable assumptions. As for the parents at the meeting who have threatened to pull their kids from school, how is that what is best for your kids? Everyone needs to remember that the students should be put first, above all of the adults issues. And, think about what you are all doing to the kids of both of these families and what it's doing to them when you make accusations and post them publicly.
I agree..it is just unfortunate that the kids in her class that came home last year and told their parents about the inappropriate behavior they witnessed are now being treated as if they were lying. What about those children and their families? Where do these families and parents go when no one will listen?
What's the big fuss about?? When I first saw the article, I thought maybe they were caught in a compromising position by students. This is an undeserved disruption of these 2 people's careers...ridiculous.
Again, if this was going on in the classroom last year, then it should have been brought to light then. Ok, parents went to the school board, and according to comments yesterday, nothing was done. Maybe it was investigated by the board, and nothing was done because no evidence of wrong doing was found. Then if parents felt so strongly that this was happening and their childrens "safety" was in question, then why not take their issues and concers further to the PCOE or the media? Instead they let their kids come back to a supposed "unsafe enviroment". Doesnt make sense?
Concerned5874- are these documented facts that the kids saw and there is evidence to back it up? Are the parents making up stories and their kids are following suit? I'm not saying the kids are lying, but this kind of thing has been known to happen before were stories are made up because of issues taken out of context and then by the time a parents hears it, it has been blown way out of porportion.
Also according to my kids, the "Bulldog Blast" might be cancelled tomorrow. We understand why it might be, but the kids don't. Hopefully Mr. Ray will be there to make sure HIS kids have a great Friday as usual. I'll be there to support them.
Parents did take the appropriate steps last year to try to resolve this appropriately. Hopefully other families will never have to be put in a position on how to respond or what actions to take when your child/children comes home and tells you what I heard. I also want to state that Mrs. Ray was and is a wonderful teacher. My support lies with her and her children..who I think have bigger issues to deal with than the bull dog blast.
The shaming behaviors of the self-appointed self-righteous moral guardians are so very very ugly.
ok, so last year was last year--over and done. What happened THIS year to prompt this type of witch hunt?
First, who is Mrs Ray? Is this Mr. Rays wife?
Second, I wouldn't jump to conclusions if my kids came home telling me what they saw. I think that IF, a big IF, they were involved in a personal relationship, they would not conduct those affairs in front of the students or on school grounds.
I understand there are other big issues besides the "Bulldog Blast". But when these types of things happen, it is best to keep things as normal as can be for the kids. AGAIN, for the kids. They look forward to it and enjoy it.
Thearticle from yesterday was a slanted article used for entertainment purposes, not even addressing real facts of concern....such as misuse of school funds, somewhere up to $50,000 given to Mr. Ray....to public attention. The Board said publicly they gave him that money and it is not completely understood why. Especially when other school programs had been cut due to funding issues at the time. That is ABSOLUTELY an appropriate issue for parents to request investigated! It is an appropriate issue for parents to request the amount of time being spent on a school phones or computers for personal use during classroom instructional hours!!! It doesn't matter what the context of those conversations are, just that they are conducted while our children are supposed to be getting an education! I don't think ANY of this should have been brought to the public's attention pending investigation. It was ccmpletely irresponsible reporting. Mr. Ray and Mrs. Heimann are are not the only victims. The parents who had legitimate concerns are now being slandered as well. However, as responsible parents, it is not irresponsible for us to ask these issues be looked into. It would be more irresponsible to look the other way. I feel bad for ALL parties, including parents only trying to do what is right for their children which is making sure they have an appropriate education.
Very well said sm8989..
The problem with CES is that the Board of Trustee's is his boss. So, if you have concerns/complaints that is who you have to address them to. Their meetings are conducted in a public forum. The fact that parents did try to address some of these issues with the Board last year and nothing was done to address them is what has frustrated parents to this point. Parents have nowhere to go with their concerns because many of the Board Members are personal friends with employees of the school. They allowed Mr. Ray into a clossed session to address issues regarding him. How can they be impartial if the person that is being discussed is sitting right there and allowed to influence their vote? The bigger picture is the breakdown of the governing system for the district and, hopefully, if anything positive can come out of this...it is that! Colfax Elementary REALLY needs a separate Principal and a separate Superintendant to ensure concerns are addressed properly. CES doesn't even imploy a Vice-Principle. One person has too much power and that needs to change regardless of personal feelings toward the person that holds that position right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sm8989, thanks for clearing up the story and filling in the details. There seems to be much more to the story than "locked doors and pulled blinds" which quite frankly, is getting old.
Now were talking about the misuse of school funds? Are u kidding me?
First, Mr. Ray & Mrs. Heimann are slapped with rumors of misconduct on school grounds, misuse of school phones and computers, and whatever else has been said and not proven. Now misuse of school funds?
I agree that parents have the right to defend their children. But are the kids saying this or have the parents witnessed these occurences? Has a parent sat in Mrs. Heimanns classooom and watched her sit on the phone for hours at a time? Surf the internet while she should be teaching? Let kids teach her class? ( as reported yesterday). Has a parent ( or teacher for that matter) seen this behavior between Mrs. Heimann & Mr. Ray?
Is it possible some parents are making more of things that they shoud be?
Did a parent go to Mrs. Heimann or Mr. Ray and say, "my child said you were on the phone today for over an hour while you should have been teaching, what was going on? Maybe those conversations were "school related" and were necessary.
I would have been asking the teacher what was happening before making assumptions that she was doing something inappropriate.
Most teachers at Colfax Elementary have been there for a long time. This is the reason I choose to enroll my children there. While people have the right not to agree with a lot of the things Mr. Ray may say or do, he has made the school a better place. He has worked hard so the kids have better lives and education. Some of the only enjoyment these kids may have is coming to school and enjoying a positive, learning enviroment. My childrens teachers have never shown me ANY reason for me to doubt their abilities nor has Mr Ray.
Just because parents dont agree with everything he does, doesn't mean he is doing anything wrong. He has to look at the school as a whole, not just certain parents, kids, or teachers, and how the school will benefit.
Wow! Two people work together and like each other. What a scandel.
Nobody asked the media to get involved and slander their names in public. What was asked was that certain items be investigated. i.e. the texting and emailing during instructional time. It is down at the courthouse in Roseville in the file Ray vs. Ray. The emails between the two during school time. No it is not regarding teaching, but implies a very real relationship that was discovered by Mrs. Ray. The parents also asked for a review of Mr. Ray abusing his powers by using the credit card for lunches and by using the power of the school during the summer months with his trailer, and all the other issues such as the pay increase etc. The relationship is not the main issue HERE.
Wow! What next?
Are there facts here or more entertainment by the Auburn Journal? ..yesterdays entertainment is gone......
Well now its on KCRA3.......I hope there is some real evidence to support these parents claims, or the parents are going to be the ones on the news next!
Unfortunately there is evidence of an innappropriate relationship between Mr. Ray and Mrs. Heiman. If anyone chooses to retrieve that evidence from the Roseville courthouse and read samples of e-mails sent during school hours, Mr. Ray and Mrs. Heiman will have few supporters left to defend them.
Great....now I've got Harper Valley PTA stuck in my head
Welll I think that if these letters did exist, the AJ would hav been all over it by now, or KCRA3 since this is on their webiste also.
What a bunch of busybodies. What actually happened did they show the Obama speech? These are real humans here folks. Every politician, and apparently school teachers need to be squeaky clean. Then all we get are the freaks, closet case pedophiles and the unstable. A few parents whatwhatwhat. Just think how it would be: a few vocal moralists get control. Books burning and witch hunts abound. This isn't about the kids, this is about revenge.
If someone has these emails, how did they get them? But before anyone answers that and before I get too drawn into this, why is their private lives or friendships any of our business? It obvious that people think Mr. Ray has done an good job and after talking with a lot of other parents and teachers its obvious Mrs. Heimann is doing a great job. Does anyone have any real proof that something is happening at school or in the public that would say "OK, that's inappropriate!" I don't think so cause it hasn't appeared yet.
No one is lying about this relationship, most people have seen these two together at odd hours and places and suspected it for a long time (since last Spring or earlier). Mrs. Ray filed a divorce over it. Public documents are accessible by anyone. You can go to the courthouse and read those emails/texts in the divorce case Ray vs. Ray. Anyone can...Mr. Ray is an excellent con artist and this article is evidence of it. Yes, he has done nice things for the school, but this group of friends of his who attack people verbally are really the only people who benefit from it. The environment at CES improved for awhile but has gotten worse for anyone on the "outside" of his circle. Adios Mr. Ray!
The kids hurt the most are their own kids. Mr. Ray was willing to walk away from his family instead of end a "friendship". All documents are public record. I am sure someone will retrieve them and the truth will come out.
Are you kidding me??? This is about a divorce case???? Why is the public getting involved in a divorce case? If you have ever been involved or been around divorce, you know everything said is suspicious. Still, no one is answering my question of 'how' someone gets access to another person's emails.
Always tough to see your private life played out in public. . . but that comes with the job. My condolences to the family and the spouses who have to live with the decisions of their partner. Remember that the people that know you, know you, and the people that don't, don't really matter.
Go look it up and open your eyes. Once you know what evidence exists, you'll stop defending him. Most people are still unaware of what exactly is going on here at our school. Mr. Ray and Mrs. Heimann should have kept it away from our kids and none of this would be happening in the public eye.
It is not about a divorce case, it is about the evidence that everyone seems to want. If they wanted their personal life to stay personal, Mr Ray shouldn't have hired Mrs. Heiman and made her an employee and they should of focused on their jobs instead of eachother.
Listen, if this is true and he and Mrs. Heimann are seeing each other, is it any of our business? There perosnal life is just that, personal. While divorce is never good, the is only one person who can judge. And it's not us. What about Mrs. Heimanns husband & children?
Sounds like Colfax is in need of a hobby store.
Let me get this right-
John Ray is hired as Superintendent and Principal of Colfax Elementary by the school board and sitting President Michelle Heimann.
Heimann resigns as board president and is hired by Ray as a long term sub (above 38 other applicants).
Ray is given a 50k loan from the board...for personal finance problems.
And yet the situation is being presented incorrectly? No one cares if they had an "inappropriate relationship". The rest speaks for itself!
I feel sorry for their families. As for Heimann, Ray and the board- you brought this on yourselves by your hubris and arrogance.
kevin123 - Their personal ife became our business when 7th grade children aren't being taught because the teacher is texting and emailing Mr. Ray during instructional time, not during "personal " time.
50K loan from the Board??? Do you guys just make this up as you go along? When did someone say there was a 50K loan? I too feel for the families as low life rumor spreaders have NO boundaries as to who or what is affected. Has anyone actually been in Mrs. Heiman's classroom to see if children are learning. Again, what I have learned is good teaching was happening and now there is a sub in the classroom. Wow, what a great impact these parents have had on their kids. Good luck Colfax, hope some of you can figure out that their is more to life than tabloids and drama.
Does anyone know this Brandon Bean??
Very nice family man. Also a police officer.
RailroadTown .....you sound a lot like an awful lot like Jon Ray defending yourself. why don't you just use your real name. What has Mrs. Heiman provided our kids except a lot of independent time while she is texting and emailing her boss. Of course her boss is in the classroom all the time, while not observing in other classrooms equally in time. Hmmm wonder why.
kevin123 ..... maybe mrs. Heiman has come out of seclusion after all. your arguments sound like you are trying to see it from both sides but it easy to see that you have a personal opinion and bias. "who is Mrs. Ray?" give me a break, isn't it a little obvious? What about Mr. Ray's spouse and children? Maybe Mr. Ray and Mrs. Heiman need to focus on their families best interest and on our children's best interest at CES.
This is my son’s second year at CES. We opted out for the first three years of his formal education because based on my interactions with the previous principal, interviews with teachers and observations of the student body, CES was not educationally or developmentally advantageous. We could be better served elsewhere.
Jon Ray and the Board of Trustees changed all that. Look at the test scores, look at the disciplinary improvements, look at the interactions between the students and the teachers. Look at how CES is fairing in the midst of this economic crisis as opposed to other schools in the state. While you’re at it, compare class sizes. The foresight of Jon Ray and the Board of Trustees has protected us to a degree I’m not sure is fully appreciated by those of us who benefit most. I am saddened that the positive momentum could now be irreparably harmed.

aldon't have a kid in school, but will in the upcoming years. For one I was a child involved in a scandal similar to this, trust me the kids around me recovered fine, but for me and 3 other children well we took a long time to recover. Whomever decided to make assumptions about an affair and take it publlic did not take into account the Heiman and Ray's children. And Jeers to the journal for making it front page news. If there was or is an affair it is only the parties involved that need to be concerned about it. Now for those parents who feel their kids at school or in danger, wake up, you as the parent have the responsiblity to make your kids realize that it isn't right but at the same time is none of their business. Remember your kids look to their parents for guideance and learning values not school. As far as him sitting in her class during the day, could it be because she is a new teacher and he has to evaluate her? Perhaps it is because there have been complaint and he is taking the correct steps. Now to the part where she is a poor teacher, that is what should had been mentioned at the meeting and the grade the kids had in the class and how much trouble they are having. Focus people on the issue if your kid is not doing well in her class. Don't get innocent people involved because you may not agree with a relationship or have a problem with a individual. Bring hard facts that your kids are not being taught appropriately.
welcome to the "journal"ism...put out a rumor, er story, and let the community write it for you. this is why newspapers are in trouble. although it seems that this one is finding new ways to do without actual reporting.
All of you seem to be missing the point. The parents asked the board to do their job and investigate to what extent things were happening. That is their job to represent those who VOTED for them. What is wrong with that???? The article should have never been written as it only brought out the "scandel" part. The parents asked for removal of these two during a quick investigation. Since they were speaking about the leaders of our school they were worried about how it would affect their children. The real HARD FACTS will be discovered during the investigation. - GOLD PAN
People saw them together at night in various places around town. Then the gossiping starts and soon unhappy people are slinging the rumors and innuendos hoping they'll stick. Tospaz. you aren't the only person that votes. I imagine the children were harmed more by the likes of you.
Where's the proof that they were texting at all, let alone for more than an hour. Colfax, the new Harper Valley PTA.
So from reading the comments in both articles it seems like everyone wants the best for the students, except for the bitter few of you who seem to want nothing more than Mrs.Heimann and Mr.Ray to be slandered and looked down on. Well lets face the facts, There is no evidence of anything other than it seems maybe a group of disgruntled parents, whos kids are getting poor grades or something as either a result of this "Issue" or their parenting. Hey or maybe both Who Knows? either way like chuxxr said "wheres the proof?" ah i see there is none.
Do people forget that Mr.Ray was a teacher last year?Well do you usually become friends with people you work with?
Ok so now your friend is your boss, but that person is still your friend. so whats the problem with that? None
Maybe some of you should lighten up your raising your blood pressure. Let nature take its course and this will be worked out in time. so just mind your business and dont be so "annoyed" and this will all be resolved.
The speculation and name calling is causing more harm than good, even to your children who's safety you are so concerned about.
Deal with this the proper way, let the investigation take place. The uneducated and grammatically incorrect comments, seem to be from bitter individuals who keep making repetitive posts about "misconduct",if there is such "misconduct" than it will be dealt with accordingly.
-AJ
Jon Ray was placed on Administrative leave last evening, pending the completion of the Board of Trustee's investigation. The board is taking the matters in question seriously and doing it's job in a very charged environment. I do not believe the board would have taken this action if there were not a basis to the issues raised regarding Mr. Ray beyond those that seem to dominate this thread.
I support the board in their work here.
I hope Jon has more to offer Michelle than his looks. Kidding, just a little humor. Perhaps in poor taste, but it made me laugh.
