Sip, sample your way through Auburn
What are you doing Saturday? Cancel the yard work, put down that laundry, turn off the TV and get ready to ingest Auburn’s finest foods and beverages. Chefs, winemakers and business owners are banding together to present the Auburn Wine and Food Festival, an afternoon of grazing sure to get your taste buds tingling. “It’s 25 restaurants, 25 wineries, and we put them in 25 businesses between Downtown and Old Town,” said Rebecca Toedter, event co-chair. From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, festivalgoers are welcome to stroll between Downtown and Old Town, stopping by participating businesses to partake in bite-sized delights from restaurants including Maria’s Tacos, Carpe Vino and Club Car while also sipping vintages created by wineries including Mt. Vernon, Montoliva and Le Casque. Toedter said this year’s festival features wineries within but also beyond Placer County. Steve Riccardelli, co-owner of the Confluence Kitchen, is excited about participating in the festival for the first time. Confluence Kitchen and Double Oak Winery will be set up at La Dolce Vita on Lincoln Way. Riccardelli said he’ll likely serve some and pinwheels accented with olive tapenade and house-made hummus, along with Andean quinoa with sweet potatoes, corn and cilantro. “It’s really nice, great flavors,” he said of the quinoa. Riccardelli looks forward to Saturday’s festivities. “It’ll be a real nice opportunity to introduce ourselves to new people and have first-hand contact, and share wine and food and community — that’s what we’re all about,” Riccardelli said. The Auburn Wine and Food Festival is a joint effort between the Placer County Wine and Grape Association and the Downtown and Old Town business associations. Toedter said it’s a fun way to generate interest in local commerce. “It’s a way to get people into businesses,” Toedter said. “It’s really grown into something that’s really fun. It’s a great kick-off to the harvest season. The weather’s always been great. Bring your friends, bring your family.” A map featuring participating businesses and the restaurants and wineries each spot hosts, is provided at check-in, which starts at 11 a.m. at the Placer County Historic Courthouse. A wine glass is also provided at check-in. Pairings Toedter is excited about include Joe Caribe and Dono dal Cielo at Bliss Studio and Lone Buffalo Vineyards and Café Zorro at Foothill Lighting. “I’m just really excited to see what everybody puts out,” she said. Jill Maddux of Lone Buffalo Vineyards plans to pour two of the Auburn winery’s favorites, Bison Blanc, a viognier, and a Where the Buffalo Roam Rhone-style blend made up of syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Maddux enjoys participating in the Auburn Wine and Food Festival. “We’re here, we’re local and we certainly believe in supporting the community, and we think it’s great that the community is trying to support us,” she said. “It’s a wonderful county and we’re all working together.” Reach Loryll Nicolaisen at lorylln@goldcountrymedia.com.
