The biggest football upset?
Kurt Johnson: Speaking Kurtly

We have hit a technical glitch this week as we have made some changes to our Placer Sports Web site, and we have temporarily lost our weekly poll question. I did not, however, want to lose the ability to take your temperature on the question that was heavy on my mind.

For those interested in sharing their positive feedback on this topic, I offer the comments feature at the bottom of this email as an alternative, and we are looking to have the poll up and running again soon.

The question could go different ways, depending on how you look at it, so I will leave that to each reader's interpretation. Which of three football games played last Friday night was the biggest upset?

Maybe you think it was not an upset that Lincoln knocked off the defending section champion since you expected it. If that is the case, maybe you are intrigued by one of our other big wins. Or perhaps, the Lincoln win was so important to the program that you go there anyway. I want to know what you think about these three games - which was the biggest upset?

Lincoln over Whitney - While there is surely someone out there who saw this coming, I have to admit that I was not one of them. Maybe I underestimated what is clearly a much-improved Lincoln team, or perhaps I overestimated the speed at which Whitney would reload.

Woodcreek over Del Campo - The Timberwolves had played a tough schedule, for sure, but they did come in 0-3. Did a young team finally get everything together and do what they are capable of doing, or was this a huge upset over a talented team of Cougars?

Oak Ridge over Casa Roble - Probably should have seen this coming with the Trojans performance in losing to Grant the week before, and the Rams proving human in a loss to Placer, but it was still a bit surprising to see a defending section champion who has played reasonably well this year knocked off by an 0-3 squad.

Maybe the strength of schedule that Woodcreek and Oak Ridge have played distorts the quality teams they are and makes these less than the upsets they seem to be, but I would love to hear what you think in the comments area below.

Call me biased...but I think Matt Mazzuca did an incredible job leading the Woodcreek Timberwolves to a fabulous victory over Del Campo. To knock of a top rated team like Del Campo required tremendous teamwork and determination! They stayed focused and played their very hardest right up until the very last second of the game.

Matt's Mom

i think the fighting zebras of lincoln pulled the greatest upset by defeating the defending section champs Whitney. It was a really big game and lincoln hasnt won whitney since back in 2006.Everyone was saying Lincoln was going to get smashed because WHitney is so good and they always win. Well they all got a reality check when Lincoln stunned them by winning 21-14. Thats gotta be the greatest game in Lincolns football history. Even my older brother said it was an amazing game. He was part of the 2000 football team that lost to colfax in the semi final playoff game the other biggest game in lincolns career.so thats why i say this is the biggest upset game compared to every other team.

I think the Lincoln win was spectacular, but you have to put into the right context. Whitney graduated the best back in the entire area. They are playing with a Sophomore QB. They are young and inexperienced. If Lincoln would have blown them out I would say greatest, but winning in the last minute and not really dominating the game, just doesn't cut it. Even a down this year Whitney was 5 yards from sending it into over time. When someone says it was the greatest upset and the greatest game in Lincoln's football history then I want to have your head examined. Really!? In all this time this is your greatest victory? This was the first game of league. You have a lot more games to win to be even considered even decent in the PVL. You have to beat a very good Bear River, a always good Colfax, and only if you beat all of them and Placer will you even be considered a great team. Beating Placer would be the greatest upset, not beating a young and inexperience Whitney. Don't make this your super bowl Lincoln because if it is then you are done. You have a very good team, but still have proved nothing. Whitney knew it was going to be a tough year when they went in a got spanked by Oakdale and are just trying to stay in the chance for a playoff spot while they grow this year. Whitney can become dangerous toward the end of the season, right in time for hosting Placer.

Now a great upset is something like a Woodcreek over Del Campo. That's upsetting.

What is a "fighting Zebra"? Zebras seem like pretty docile animals

yakyak we were talking about the greatest upset not whose doing good in the pvl or anything like that buddy. your getting to ahead of yourself and dont know what your talking about. plus whitney even with a young good sohpmore is a good team they beat colfax and will keep beating teams, just like lincoln will. you need your head examined because all you said made no sense to what the original question was made. Also whitney didnt know anything ok they thought they would win everyone especially lincoln they said it theirselves in fine print that they were coming in to stomp on lincoln and that didnt happen. And also a win is a win doesnt matter about how late it comes down to in the game to get the winning touchdown. Whitney had many chances to score but got stopped as did lincoln as well the game could have been lincoln 35-21

ayala58; I think long time Lincoln fans would agree that their first ever win over previously undefeated Del oro in 1965 was their greatest win. They had a parade the next day I am told. Ask Mark Hayward about that one (he later became a Del Oro teacher.

It's nice to see so many of the old Pioneer League teams doing so well these days. :)

The defending Section Champs graduated last spring. That team is gone all with all it's stars. The school is still there but that team is not. Last seasons team would have hammered Lincoln like it did in it's previous two seasons. BTW this was not Lincolns first victory over Whitney. they beat Whitney in it's first Varsity season when they had only juniors.

Yakyak brings some great points to the table and I feel he is on point. Remember it's not where you start but where you finsh. bear River, Colfax and especially Placer are not going to roll over. Earn those stripes first and then you cab smack away....

Coda....I'll buy the first round for losing?

ya well we will see how lincoln does in these next weeks dont think they should have trouble with el dorado, marysville, and colfax as much as bear river and placer.

Too bad Woodcreek has only one win this year....in HS sports it is not good enough to do an "incredible job" one game out of six. What WC is lacking is veteran leadership.

Lincoln has not just one, but a few players who are big enough to play pro. None of their wins will be upsets it will be expected. Now if anyone beats them, then THAT will be an upset.
