Falcons score some more karma points
Sierra Scoop
By Todd Mordhorst Journal Sports Editor

The Colfax High football team leads the Pioneer Valley League, the Sac-Joaquin Section and maybe the state in karma points.

Coach Tony Martello and the Colfax team deserve a lot of credit for agreeing to postpone Friday’s clash with rival Bear River.

The Falcons had to be chomping at the bit, eager to get another crack at the Bruins after seeing their seven-game win streak over their rivals snapped last year in Colfax. But the team graciously allowed the game to be re-scheduled for Monday after learning that more than a dozen Bear River players were out sick Friday.

Martello conceded it was not an easy decision.

“It was definitely a tough call,” Martello said. “I’d be a liar if I said it was easy. We all have our points of view and there were a lot of factors involved in the decision.”

Playing Monday throws off the schedule for both teams and will no doubt impact next week’s games and beyond. The Falcons have a crucial game with defending league champion Whitney looming on Friday. Meanwhile the Bruins host Lindhurst in a non-league affair following the Colfax game.

“That is the biggest thing — there are three really tough teams in our league and we happen to play Bear River and Whitney back-to-back,” Martello said. “Now we have three days to get ready for a very good Whitney team.”

So in agreeing to postpone Friday’s game, was Martello practicing, “Do unto others as you would have them do to you?” He wouldn’t say so exactly. He was basically just being a nice guy.

“We had a tough time empathizing because we’re not experiencing it,” Martello said. “I’ve heard so many things and it’s hard to really understand what is real and what is exaggerated. But they requested it and you have to take that at face value. It’s just a tough situation for them.”

It’s not the first time Colfax has been put in a tight spot due to factors out of its control.

I don’t have to remind anyone that the Falcons were the team headed to Oakdale for a first-round playoff date last fall before getting the infamous phone call instructing them to turn the bus around. Placer wound up making the trip to Oakdale a week later while the Falcons’ season ended unceremonisouly.

The Placer football program is a perfect 12-0 when you combine the records of the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams. The perfect mark speaks to the depth of talent at the school as well as the quality coaches throughout the system.

Freshman coach Jim Gray raves about the kids on his team. Running back Michael Robinson is a star in the making — rumor has it he could be in a varsity jersey for the varsity playoff run in November. But the frosh are also blessed with tremendous size and athleticism up and down the roster.

Coach Rick Foley’s junior varsity squad may lack star power, but they’re getting it done with great line play and steady offensive execution. The coach’s son Johnny Foley is the quarterback and he’ll welcome back leading rusher Colton Davenport next week after he missed two games with an injury.

Placer fans will also get their first look at tight end Alec Burnett on Friday. The brother of varsity QB Collin Burnett has yet to play this year, but he’ll add another dimension to the JV offense with his size and athleticism.

It’s tough to make Tim Twietmeyer look like he’s standing still.

That wasn’t exactly the case this, but Auburn’s legendary ultrarunner had one of his many records passed up in stunning fashion this week up in Lake Tahoe.

Killian Jornet, a 21-year-old phenom from Spain, shattered Twietmeyer’s 14-year-old record at the Tahoe Rim Trail Run. Jornet completed the epic 165-mile trek in 38 hours, 32 minutes – trimming more than seven hours off of Twietmeyer’s record.

Jornet’s feat was part of a journey called Killian’s Quest, in which he is taking on ultrarunning challenges all over the world supported by Salomon.

From the Catalan region in Spain, Jornet made his name in Europe by winning the notoriously difficult Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc the last two years.

Jornet doesn’t have any plans to run Auburn’s Western States Endurance Run next year, but look for him to take a crack at Scott Jurek’s course record within the next few years.

Kudos to Coach Martello and AD Hitchcock. Bottom line is that Colfax didn't have to reschedule and they did despite the obvious disadvantage it will cause his players in upcoming games. Without a weekend to recover from the upcoming game Monday and giving Whitney an extra day to prepare for the Falcon's after their loss to the Fighting Zebras is beyond gracious. . . .It's PRICELESS!!!

Colfax is a class act on all accounts. The chivalry is likely to be extra generous since (I expect) every PVL coach will be scouting the game. As a Whitney parent, I'm pulling for Colfax.

Colfax 31-BR 30 KARMA!!!

31-30! Very, very nice Colfax.
