Flu postpones Bear River-Colfax football game until Monday
Nearly half of the Bear River squad absent from school Friday
By Gus Thomson, Journal Staff Writer
The Bear River-Colfax football rivalry is on hold until MOnday because of flu.

One of the foothills' most heated high school football rivalries was put on hold until Monday because of flu sweeping through the Bear River football team.

The Bear River-Colfax football game slated for Friday has been postponed until Monday because of an outbreak of the flu that hit 14 Bear River varsity players.

Duwaine Ganskie, Bear River athletic director, said Friday that the game will now start at 7 p.m. Monday at Bear River High School’s Dave Ramsey Field.

“We reached the critical point where we didn’t feel we could safely field a football team, both with the numbers of healthy bodies we had left and the fact that it’s getting worse,” Ganskie said. “We had more kids out today.”

The junior varsity game between the two schools will also now be played Monday, with game time scheduled for 5 p.m.

Fourteen of the Bear River varsity's 32 players did not attend school Friday because of flu-like symptoms. Ganskie said he couldn't say whether they were related to the H1N1 virus.

“We don’t know if it’s anything other than regular flu,” Ganskie said. “It’s hitting a lot of people.”

Ganskie worked with Colfax Athletic Director Rob Hitchcock to reschedule a game that could have been forfeited if hadn’t been played by Tuesday because of California Interscholastic Federation rules on time between games and scheduling conflicts.

Colfax also did some juggling with its next home game against Whitney - initially moving it up a day from Oct. 9 and then shifting back to the original date. The game is now on for Friday.

“A lot of praise goes out to them for being understanding,” Ganskie said.

Hitchcock said the decision to postpone the game also involved principals from both schools. Both athletic directors and principals agreed with the ultimate decision to delay the game, he said. The schools also found support from the Pioneer Valley League commissioner, he said.

“Our team has had some illness but not beyond the normal,” Hitchcock said. “We’ve worked our way through it and it’s worked its way through us. But things could change in a heartbeat and we could be the ones next Friday in the same boat.”

The school expected up to 3,000 spectators at the Friday game between teams from nearby schools in neighboring counties that have built up a heated rivalry over two decades.

Ganskie said the flu spread quickly among varsity players while the junior varsity squad remained relatively healthy. A couple of varsity players were out with the flu Tuesday and then the number jumped to 11 Thursday. An attendance check Friday showed 14 Bruin team members out, he said.

“That took us down to 18 with some other kids not looking too good,” Ganskie said.

Bear River set a precedent with the postponement.

“We’ve never had to do this before,” Ganskie said. “This is a first and, unfortunately, not something you want to experience. But our goal is keeping everybody healthy and fielding teams that won’t continue to pass it along.”

The Bear River student body as a whole isn’t suffering to the same degree as the football team, Ganskie said.

“We’re trying to isolate it by telling kids to stay home,” Ganskie said.

The move to Monday is more than just getting two teams to play on a field on a different day.

“We’re trying to be positive,” Ganskie said. “It’s a huge production to put on football game and it’s no small matter to move this even a couple of days. We have officials, security, announcers, scoreboard operators, ambulance people – they all have to be contacted. And hopefully they can find room on their calendars.”

Hey BearRiver,

You might want to rethink your cute little "Beating Colfax is so Easy a Caveman can do it" T shirts. You have to show up in order to win

Good one, Yahooligan...you really got 'em good with that one!!!

or

Bear River can simply wait until Monday, and then wear the shirts.....

Yah, lets forget that these are kids.... sick kids. Props to Colfax to reschedule the game... the volleyball teams had to do it too... get over it. What are you trying to teach them by making them play? Last I checked, pro players miss games due to illness... if I'm sick I call in to work... and if my kids are sick I expect them to stay home to not get the rest sick.

You ask them to play, get destroyed by Colfax and that's gonna teach everyone a lesson? How would Colfax look if they played a full squad against the 15 remaining players? It's about sportsmanship, nothing else. Flair and Balance, get over it. OH and I could care less who wins... GO PLACER!!!

RIGHT ON FAIRANDBALANCED!!!!!! Football IS A TEAM sport!!!

GO PLACER? Are you kidding? They always are the first to start this type of nonsense. Even though I have no kids in any of these high schools, I do love and follow sports, and this malarchy along with that ridiculous episode last year that Placer put everyone through has finally pushed me into being a Colfax fan. Win or lose, they seem to always conduct themselves with respect for others and for the sport they represent. I don't know if it's the AD's, or the coaches, or the school staff but if BR and Placer have this same approach in the classroom I shutter to think what kind of lessons these kids are learning. And whoever the dummy was above that talked about pro athletes missing games because they're ill, maybe you should read your own comment again. You hit it on the head -- THEY MISS THE GAME, the game doesn't get postponed so that everyone is inconvenienced by the problem of a few. Don't kid yourselves, BR wasn't concerned about the well being of others, they were concerned about one player whose absence would impact the game.

Attention Football Fans:

According to pushingvws statement: Chad Pennington of the Miami Dolphins is injured and out for the season. Due to this unfortunate circumstance, Sundays game will be postponed until Chad can return to play.

Right pushing?????

And sick leave has nothing to do with playing in a game. Football is NOT a game of entitlement.

What the HELL are all of you people talking about?????

Bear River wasn't simply missing "their star player"....Yes, football is a TEAM sport...and HALF of the entire Bear River TEAM is sick with the flu, not just one or two kids!

If you read the article...14 of the 32 kids on the roster weren't even in school today, leaving a total of 18 players...and if you read on further, you will notice where Ganskie makes reference to the 18 remaining healthy players, and how some of them weren't looking to good as of this morning...insinuating he wasn't even sure how many healthy players they would be able to suit up tonight.

Hats off to Coach Martello and the Colfax AD for doing the right thing in this situation...they could have very easily refused to re-schedule and taken the forfeit, but they understood the situation and agreed to postpone.

Just as Bear River agreed to postpone a volleyball match against Placer earlier this year when 12 of the 15 Placer players were sidelined with the flu. Its called "sportsmanship" people.....Bear River did it for Placer and now Colfax has now done it for Bear River.

FairandBalanced....

I'm trying to make sense of your argument...

Shame on you Bear River?

Shame on them for what?

For not wanting to help spread the flu among even more of their own players, and potentially to a number of Colfax players and coaches....I just can't see your angle on this.

Postponing this game was the right thing to do....for both schools, for all of the players involved, the coaches, the officials, bus drivers, etc, etc, etc....let it go....

For The "Haters"....

Lest any of you TRULY believe this is some deviously unprecedented stunt being pulled by Bear River to somehow gain an unfair advantage of some sort......do as I did just a few minutes ago....

Go on-line and Google "High School Football Game Postponed due to Illness" and see how many hits you get.

Across the County, from Illinois to Texas to Kansas, North Dakota, etc, etc, numerous high school football games have been cancelled over the past 2, 3, 4 weeks due to a number of players on one or both teams becoming ill with the flu.

I will re-iterate my previous post....GREAT job by BOTH Colfax and Bear River in agreeing to postpone tonight's game!

Jim Webb ~ It just makes my day that you are still nutted up over the glorious and history making football season of Placer High School! The victory obtained was far more profound for foster children in our state then even you can imagine. Placer should be proud of everything accomplished. Oh... and ...yes.....Go PLACER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!! Sounds like we have some pre-schoolers among us. My son was sick for 2 weeks with the flew, and is finally getting back on his feet. He is a Bear River, Varsity Player and I am so glad that he is. What a shame to have the opposing side totally disregard a health issue that could take someones life!!!! Get real!!! I am glad I do not have to answer for the lot of people who support these disgusting views. My wish is that people like you who can be so shallow, would not have the pleasure of watching these teams play a GAME!!!!!

Attention FairandObviouslyUnbalanced Football Fans.....

The West Virginia Times-Standard-Herald-Telegraph is reporting that a number of unbalanced football fans, one in particular, are crying "conspiracy" in the wake of the devastating November 14th (1970) plane crash that tragically claimed the lives of 37 members of the Marshall University Football Team.

Said one such unbalanced fan, "...Why the hell can't they play this weekend? I mean, let's go...I know that 37 of 'em were killed in that crash the other night, but what the hell...they still have 22 left don't they? After all...football is a TEAM sport, why can't the 22 who are still alive suit up, get their butts out there and compete...oh, they need ALL 57 players? That's just weak...boo hoo..."

Shake yourself F&B, it's a freaking HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME!!!!!!!

Tougher days lie ahead......

You can say that again, irritated!! I hope the negative comments regarding this article do not represent the colfax fans!! We have much larger things to worry about in this country. We folk need to stick together and focus our energies on bettering our communities. Life is just to darn short. Hope all the players out sick at Bear River get well soon!!!!!

Wow! I do not even have kids who play football, but I have a daughter that attends Placer and participates in a couple of the team sports and thankfully there is not this type of silliness involved in those sports she is involved in.

This hoopla and fanaticism over high school football is unbelievable to me.

As ValueMyRights said, there are plenty of more important issues to get concerned about and life is too short for this nonsense!

Good job to Bear River agreeing to cancel for Placer volleyball and for Colfax agreeing to cancel for Bear River. A forfeit due to a large percentage of the team being sick is not how the kids want to win a game.

Come on parents, be parents and set a good example for your children! It’s ONLY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL!

"reschedule a game that could have been forfeited if hadn’t been played by Tuesday because of California Interscholastic Federation rules on time between games and scheduling conflicts"

EXACTLY! Forfeit isn't a four-letter word. The above is a direct quote from the article. I rest my case. Inconvenience the majority for a few..........

and irriated-- I won't dignify your disgusting comment about the WV team. Unbelievable. No wonder Bear River is so messed up.

LOL....F&B, can you hear yourself?

You won't dignify MY disgusting comment?

Grow the hell UP!!!!

Colfax agreed to reschedule the football game on Monday because in accordance with CIF rules the game would HAVE to have been forfeited if it wasn't played prior to Tuesday.

This argument is so incredibly ironic and twisted...if Bear River had gone forward with the game tonight, and half of the Colfax team woke up with the flu next Monday morning, everyone would be screaming bloody murder that the game wasn't postponed.

What's the real issue here, F&B.....do you figure Colfax's only chance against BR this year would be to play them at half-strength? Why not wait until both teams are at full strength, and then play the game.

If the game had been cancelled due to one or two players being sick, that would be a different story, but that isn't the case. 14 of 32 players were out of school today with the flu F&B....do you understand that 14 players represents FORTY-FOUR percent of their entire team?

My God....why am I even wasting my breath on this...good luck F&B....you and those like you need it more than the sane....

And its starts again!! Although its sometimes hard to digest, Id rather live in this great country where everyone has the Freedom to speak, regardless of their views or capacity to make sense. Lets see, just what lesson would Colfax learn by showing up at BR tonite and beating up their practice squad, then going home with their Victory and spreading this flu to the rest of their team and families. Yeah that makes sense!! Webb calls this "NONSENSE" ?? When was it last spring? they closed Mexico? every port, airport etc. to all travelers due to this virus, yet the powers that be decide to re-sch. a high school football game and some figure it for a conspiracy? I for one know a few coaches that are praying this doesnt happen to them. Everyone has worked all year to get to this point and Im sure none of them wants to do this. And like last year, most of the noise comes from people on the outside who are lacking in fact. Get better BR, Stay healthy Colfax, and strive to play another day!! Besides if you play Monday I can come watch!!! PHSJAZZ1978

I think its no use because colfax is still gonna win on monday!!!!!!! Good Luck Colfax

i do hope the Bear River players get better though

Quit assuming what Colfax would or would not do. You have no idea. Colfax stands on its own two feet and its record stands for itself. We don't hide, have never hidden and will never hide. If you want to pave the way for the players on a sugar-coated street and not let the players learn life's lessons then good for you. I, on the other hand am a realist and know that all in life may not be fair. What's to say that the players will all be well on Monday? This whole argument is insane.... play the game on Friday or forfeit. It's unfortunate but that's life. Irritated: try to remember how Colfax handled last years fiasco with the playoffs? CLASS ACT! NO COMPLAINTS! Colfax told the kids that sometimes life can be ugly, unfair, unreasonable. But NOT ONE player complained. They stood tall, strong and learned a valuable lesson. Take a cue irritated.

If these kids really have the flu, they should not be at practice right now! I just drove home and there is about 30 kids on the field! Not JV they are Varsity! And if we are all worried about spreading the flu, these boys should not be playing on monday either :( Good luck Colfax!

Maybe they'll all go get a flu shot by monday

Irritated, do you think that Bear River is going to be 100% by Monday?? Really?? I would guess that there may be at least a couple more of these players coming down with this flu by Monday. That coupled with the reports that this flu last a good five days, the Bear River team will be lesser than 100% than they are right now. So lets see, more players less than 100%, minimal practice, the opportunity to pass this flu to Colfax on Monday - sounds like a win win for everybody involved except for the gate $$ being missed out on tonight. The Marshall reference was disgusting, not even close to this situation. Even as watered down that Little League has become, if you don't have enough players to field a team, that team has to forfeit.

I'm glad that the powers that be are allowing the players to keep the game. They all have practiced hard and deserve the opportunity to put their efforts to work. I do question, though, the thnking behind giving the Colfax players the opportunity to be exposed to those that will still be playing with the flue on Monday and then turn around and play Friday against Whitney.

So what happens if Colfax players all come down with the flu on Saturday or Sunday? Since the game can't then be played by Tuesday, would Colfax have to forfeit? Hardly seems fair

Fair & Balanced - I do not accept your statement that Colfax is a class act until the school at least replaces the game announcer who is an unabashed homer. He knows how to rub it in when the away team is loosing even some of the Colfax parents on the away side were going to speak to him about this.

None of Ya'll missed your game last night did ya?....lol...

Games are being cancelled all over the state. It is for the safety of the students. Everyone relax. Postponing the game teaches sportsmanship and compassion. Just Chill.

Disclaimer: I am a Colfax fan and father of a Colfax varsity athlete (not football, though)

That said, I think "Fair and Balanced" is dead wrong. The Colfax AD (a very good guy) and the coach made the right call to postpone this game as long as the CIF allows to give the BR players a chance to recover.

I have watched the last few BR/Colfax contests including last year's which was the first defeat for Colfax in a long time. I would like to see this rivalry played with both teams as close as possible to 100%. I am very much looking forward to watching the game on Monday and hope there will be the usual hard fought contest and partisan fans which makes this annual match up so much fun. I hope Johnny Jewett is at full strength; I'd like to see what Baldoni and the others can do to stop him.

We quickly forget when a player or coach or manager makes a decision that may be within the rules but lacks sportsmanship. But I, for one, will never forget the story of the women on that college softball team who carried an opposing player around the diamond to touch the bases after she hit a winning home run but got injured after rounding first base. youtube.com/watch?v=ODqjUqW3c0U

Go Falcons, beat (the healthy) Bruins.

oh hey fairandbalanced....weird the placer girls varsity volleyball postponed their game till a week later because they were sick. how do you feel about that? is that cause they were "throwing sissy fits"? every sports team ever would not want to play if HALF of their players were out sick. don't act like whatever school you represent would play with half of their team out.

go bear river

i wasn't done.... you're just saying all that because you don't think you can beat us when we do have our STAR players. so shame on you fair and balanced. don't be a hypocrite. GO BRUINS! and i hope that all the sick players get well soon.

yeah go pushing vws.

miuwtant, now that's what I am talking about. That softball moment, to me, is one of the 100 greatest moments of all time. The exact opposite happened in softball as well. An opposing coach had a game winning homerun thrown out because the as the girl rounded third she high-fived a teammate. Apparently, that contact is illegal. The coach eventually went on to win the game, but lose the respect of every athlete in the world. The Colfax coaches and AD acted with perfect integrity. It seems to me the PUHSD has a lot to be proud of. Colfax...much respect.

I totally agree it was the right thing to do for Bear River due to a lot of their team being sick, but when you go bye the field on friday night and there are 30 kids on the field..NOT jv but varsity, that seems a little interesting. If these kids really have the flu, they should not be at practice.

Up until now, I didn't feel the need to make a comment. Most of the Colfax fans have clearly shown their lack of sportsmanship and understanding of high school sports, and I didn't need to point out their pettiness, as they did it just fine on their own. But to the fools who claim that Varsity was practicing on Friday~you really shouldn't state something as fact that you know nothing about. Did you walk out there and ask the kids how old they were? How could you tell as you 'drove by' that they were Varsity? With your super-age deducting vision? Well, it let you down KMurray & chsparent2. Varsity did not practice on Friday--they were sent home (those that were still at school anyway). Looks like you mistook our FROSH team as Varsity. Stop spreading rumors and lies that are based on nothing but you 'driving by'.

From dictionary.com

sports·man·ship (spôrts'm?n-sh?p', sp?rts'-)

n.

The fact or practice of participating in sports or a sport.

Conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing.

FairandBalanced--you proved my point again. Thank you. Fair play? Against less than half a team? Courtesy? "boo-hoo..... BR was busy throwing sissy fits instead of practicing with the players they have". Grace in losing? You're throwing a tantrum over a 3-day postponement. Get over it, and try to act like a member of the human race, and not a disgruntled over-obsessed fan. I hope the Colfax players don't share your backwards "FairandBalanced" views.

GRACE IN LOSING ~~~~ READ IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

GRACE IN LOSING ~~~ GEEZ~~~ THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY COIN !!!!!!!!!!! IF BEAR RIVER WAS REALLY A SPORTS TEAM THEY WOULD HAVE FORFEITED THE GAME INSTEAD OF DISRUPT THE SCHEDULE.

OH MY~~~ HOW DARE A COLFAX FAN HAVE AN OPINION THAT GOES AGAINST THE BELOVED BEAR RIVER. GRACE IN LOSING...... YEP.. THAT'S A CLEAR DEFINATION OF SPORTSMANSHIP

What? I couldn't hear you... maybe you can push caps lock and bold, and then maybe we'll hear your stupid argument. What a joke.

NO~~~ ITS IN CAPS SO YOU CAN READ IT AS YOU MUST BE SO OLD THAT YOU CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A STUDENT IN HIGH SCHOOL !!!! WANTED TO MAKE IT EASY FOR YOU!!!! APPARENTLY IN THE OLD DAYS IT WAS BETTER TO WHINE, COMPLAIN AND STOMP YOUR FEET!

SEE YOU AT THE FIELD!!! :)

chsparent2, you did see the frosh team on Friday night. Freshmen often practice on the Friday after a game.

chsparent2, it would be prudent to get the facts before you speak. I have a freshman and varisty football player at BR. Both the varsity and JV practices were cancled on friday afternoon. The freshman always practice until 5:00 on Friday. Also, I find it interesting that everyone is afraid to use their real names when making comments. I stand behind what I have to share by using my real name. All I have read so far is a bunch of emotional responses to a situation that most of you do not have all of the facts about. Colfax could have said no to our request for a postponement but they didn't, BR could have played with less 1than 14 players, it is what it is and I would think that those making these incidious comments should reflect on why it is so important to put any school, team, admintration, player or staff down in a plubic forum. Most of you need to get a life, spread kindness not hate, demostrate good sportsmanship. Maybe you should check out the picture of the Jesuit QB shaking the Christian Brothers QB hand after CB beat Jesuit by one point in the Holy Bowl (Sacramento Bee Website) this last September. That's a real rivalry in addition to true sportmanship. I once saw the following imprinted on the back of a 13 year old basball team' tshirt. "The ego of the individual must die in order for the team for survive". We are all a team in life. If we continure to let our egos get in the way no one will survive. GO BRUINS!

All the rivalry, tradition and even a little trash talking make the contest fun, but the bottom line is let’s do everything possible to let these kids play the game and decide the outcome on the field, the boys up here love to play each other, even if this game had to be rescheduled for the end of the season to let these teams play on the field than so be it. Who would want a win in there record by forfeit? Anyone who would want a win other than proving it on the field has a screw loose. I hope everyone it at 100% for the game so that the win is true. Where were all you fairness and sportsmanship supporters last season when placer had their wins taken away because of one foster kid transfer? Bear River was the whistle blower and Colfax was ready to head to a playoffs they didn’t deserve to be in. Good job Bear River and Colfax for making sure the game happens. May the best team win.

Being a Placer grad and fan, I didn't have a favorite to win this game. But I have to say that now I'm leaning toward BR. Would you CH parents and fans really be happy with a win against a team that is down so many players? Maybe everyone could throw the ball was sick. Would you want to play a team without a QB? Would that be a win to be proud of??? Did your last loss to BR really make you that bitter?

FairandBalanced-Inconvenienced were you? So sorry, maybe the BR kids will still be weak from the flu tomorow and you'll get your win. THAT should make Colfax proud.

My kids go to placer also (Go HIllman!) But I think this was a lose-lose situation for Colfax. You know they wanted to play Bear River. You know they wanted to beat them fairly! But, if they said no to the postponing of the game everyone would be yelling at them and staying they are poor sports! So now they play Bear River on monday and that leaves them 3 day to get ready for Whitney on friday! Bear River on the other hand plays a non-league game against Lindhurst. I heard that Whitney said they would play on saturday, but that the Colfax Jr Falcons had 4 games at home on that day. So because Bear Rivers starters are sick they would ask that potentially 12 football teams that include players, coaches, parents, fans, emergency personal, refs, announcers, janitors and volunteers to move. So it appears that Colfax is just going to deal with what was dealt to them. They will play Whitney on friday night and all the younger kids will have there games on saturday. I don't think people are thinking of the big picture. Football is a team sport and there is a lot involved in putting on a football game. And it was wonderful that Bear River moved a volleyball game for Placer. But it did not effect so many different people. I guess I feel sorry for Colfax, they didn't ask to be involved in last years issues and I am sure they really don't want to be involved in this years drama either!

TKMurray- I agree, the last couple of years have been rough for Colfax. But they should man up and handle it with class. Actually the school, players and coaches are doing just that. It's the parent and fans who seem to be the most upset. And the game will be played, just 72 hours later. I think the bigger issue is protecting the community from needless exposure to the flu.

If Bear River really wanted to protect the community, why didn't they just forfeit, give there team another whole week to get better

I can't believe most of these comments. I'm glad Colfax decided to play the game on Monday instead of having BR forfeit.

Here's an interesting question, If Bear River's game this past week had been Mesa Verde instead of Colfax and their next game was Whitney (not a non league game) would they still have wanted the postponement?? Would they have been willing to sacrifice a three day practice week to prepare for the section champ from last year . Or would this flu thing have been something they could have found their way through this week. HMMMM? I personally know three different Bear River varsity families who admitted this flu epidimic was over stated and it was really a concern over just a handful of players. You bleeding heart, compassion seeking do gooders are either hypocrits or extremely naive.

LOL...WOW, JimWebb....conspiracy theories abound...lol...

I'm sure that's EXACTLY what it was....lol...Bear River looked at the schedule and thought to themselves, "Hhhmmm, let's see, if we can get 14 kids to stay home on Friday, then maybe we can get Colfax to agree to postpone the game until Monday...which is ultimately going to help us win the PVL, because then they'll only have 3 days to get ready for Whitney...yeah, lets do it...lets play 'sick' and see if we can get Colfax to bite..."

Do you truly believe that Nieto and Ganskie would sacrifice the huge revenue windfall from a Friday night home game against Colfax, simply to put Colfax in a position to have to play Whitney on a short week?

irritated, does any of this help Bear River? Time will tell. It was interesting to see, from the news report, how much Ganskie relied on this game to make or break the season financially.

Reality....I can't imagine how any of this is an advantage to Bear River. Not on the field against Colfax or Lindhurst, and certainly not for their athletic budget.

Even if the players who were sick and out of school last week are well enough to play tonight, they haven't been on the practice field in who knows how many days, and they can't possibly be a full strength physically.

Postponing the game until tonight has a huge financial impact in lost gate receipts for Bear River. One or more of my children have been attending Bear River since 2002, so I have witnessed first hand for the past 7 years what it means for that school financially when they play a home football game against Colfax. There will still be a good crowd on hand tonight, but my guess is they won't come even close to half of what they would have had if the game had gone forward on Friday night.

If they had expected 3,000, and only draw 1,500 tonight, the estimated loss is probably close to $10,000 in gate receipts and concessions.

Lastly, the class of PVL football this year is Placer and Lincoln, the best Colfax, BR and Whitney can hope for is to battle for the 3rd playoff spot.

Looking forward to see Bear River play Colfax. Good luck to both teams!!!!

You guys are so thick in the head I can't believe it. Whoever loses the Bear River- Colfax game is likely not going to make the playoffs. If you want to talk finances, let's just say Bear River get's half the normal Friday night crowd tonight but has a better chance of winning and therfore making the playoffs. What's the financial impact of getting a playoff game or two or three versus not making the playoffs at all. And NO I don't think the objective was to disadvantage Colfax for Whitney. It's just that all this compassion crap has been thrown out there to disguise their real concern - losing against Colfax and not making the playoffs. They would have found a way to play the game on schedule if it had been Mesa Verde followed by Whitney for Bear River but because it was Colfax and could impact their playoff hopes, they pull out the compassion crying towels and start begging for postponement. Come On.

Ok, Jim....

Some people are just not destined to be Sportsman of the Year.

Hey iirritated!!!! What a great game tonight!!! WoW!!!! Bear River couldn't beat Colfax tonight! I hope that you were there - enjoying every tantilizing minute while the Colfax team played with honesty, integrity, grit and heart. I don't care what you say - you don't have a clue what was in the hearts of the Colfax players tonight. I do! And by the way - I have had 5 kids at Colfax High School for the last 12 years and all 5 were varstiy players of different sports. So, I speak with lots of experience. Colfax played tonight with the intention of being the best team. When it came down to the final play, Colfax relied on what it knows.. honesty always pays off and liars and cheaters never prosper. So, you can go on and on and ramble some more - but just to let you know that I won't waste another minute of my beautiful life arguing the point - the best team won and it was Colfax - for many many many reasons! I'm proud of Colfax Football and the team showed what it means to play like a team! Way to go Colfax!!

F&B, you obviously have much more of an emotional investment in all of this than I. The winner of last night's game had and has very little personal impact on me, so I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I wasn't actually at the game, I was home watching and epic match-up between the Packers and Vikings on MNF.

As a resident of the area and a parent of past and present varsity athletes at Bear River, I was simply happy that the teams were allowed to settle the game on the field. I agree that the best team won last night...Colfax MUST have been the best team last night....they won the game! However, your reference to Bear River players as "liars and cheaters" might be a little over the top.

Best of luck to Colfax the rest of the way, it was obviously a good win for them last night...and I'm guessing the victory might taste even sweeter for the Colfax players this morning knowing they won the game on the field!

It was a great game and it is too bad somebody had to lose. The Colfax players did what they needed to do to win - and they should be proud of their accomplishment.

F&B...While I appreciate the verbal sparring and rivalry, your act has grown tiresome. What bothers me is that for such a proponent of "class" and "truth" (no balance whatsoever) you certainly lack any trace of humility. Be glad that your team won and you were entertained for a few hours by some hard-working young men. I know a lot of Colfax parents and you are NOT like the majority. The more you write, the more you mock yourself and make your fellow Colfax fans/parents look bad.

In hindsight, I'm actually curious about something....F&B, you have repeatedly claimed to have "first hand knowledge" of, and speak with "lots of experience" about the Colfax football program, the players, coaches, etc, etc...I'm pretty sure you also claimed that last night you knew what was in each player's heart!

If you go back and read through each of my posts on this thread, you will find that not once did I speak poorly of the Colfax football team, players, school, coaches, etc, etc. In fact, I'm pretty sure my angle all along was giving credit to Coach Martello and Colfax for agreeing to postpone the game.

You and others made an initial statement that the game should have gone forward on Friday, regardless of how many healthy players BR had available because....well, because football is a TEAM sport, right?

So, and just out of curiosity, since you also made the claim in your last post that Colfax showed "what it means to play as a team", I have two questions for you:

1. How many kids are on the Colfax Varsity Football roster?

2. How many of the kids on the roster played against BR last night?

Just curious to know if Colfax used their entire TEAM last night, or if they only used PART of their TEAM?

You're setting yourself up to look foolish irritated.

I have heard this and witnessed it first hand last night. Colfax plays true platton football. If you watched closely you would have noticed that NO players on the Colfax squad play both ways. In addition there are a great many players that while backups to the first strings offense and defense primarily get their game time on special teams.

On the other hand you should perhaps answer your same question for BR. I noticed several of their players play both ways . There are plenty of players on their roster to play the same type of platoon system so why don't they? They have more kids in school to draw a team from. I believe Colfax has the smallest enrollment in the PVL. Are the BR kids just less talented? Is the BR coaching just inferior? Or is the difference just a validation that one team understands the sport and truly does play a "team" concept, and the other just wears out a handful of it's more talented players and strictly plays to win and will do near anything (including exageratting the flu) to make it happen.

Maybe you should try some other ploy to devalue Colfax's victory.

LOL....Holy Cow, JimWebb, it was JUST a question!

The irony in your post is that you have absolutely NO idea how I view Bear River athletics, yet you act as though you know me. If you bothered to ask before making so many assumptions, I would be the first to tell you that Bear River football has traditionally always played way too many kids both ways....Coach Martello doesn't play kids both ways...anyone who has spent much time at all around PVL football knows this, and I believe this also is a large part of why Colfax is typically so successful.

I do however find it curious how both you and F&B feel this incredible need to bash Bear River, the football players, the coaches, all of it. I wonder why that is...can either of you make a post without calling Bear River players "stupid" or "liars", "cheaters", "inferior", "less talented", etc, etc....lol....better be careful, one of these stupid, cheating, inferior, less talented young men might actually grow up to marry one of your daughters....lol..and then you'll be stuck with a lying, cheating, no-good SOB for a son-in-law...lol...and a BR alumn no less!!!

LOL.....much love to you both...

I didn't CALL them "inferior", or "less talented". I simply ask you if that was your explanation. I will admit though that BR people often seem to have some high and mighty attitude about their sports that I can never understand. Maybe a couple of years of baseball success, a girls basketball championship or two, and usually a pretty good softball team but what else they have to crow about I have never figured out.

Finally we agree on something JimWebb...Bear River male athletics, in general, are HORRIBLE!!! Just to be clear though, I wasn't looking for an excuse and or explanation as to why Colfax won last night...Colfax has always, in my memory, had a quality football program...very good talent and great coaching. In no way was, or would I try to devalue their win last night.....like many other BR parents, I have a number of close friends whose children attend Colfax, not to mention that I have coached a number of current and past Colfax athletes.

As the parent of past and present Bear River Varsity athletes (Baseball, Football, Basketball and Volleyball), the BR athletic program has NOTHING to crow about...especially with the clown they have in their as an AD now. If my memory serves, not a single boys varsity team has won anything beyond the PVL level in the past 10 years, and given some of the talent that has come through that school over the past 10 years, to be honest with you, that is truly a shame!

It starts at the top, and from what I've witnessed over the past 7 years, the current administration at BR simply does not support athletics! Sadly enough, that includes the fool they have as an AD, unless it involves basketball.

The only thing Ganskie cared about when they moved the game from Friday to Monday was how much of a hit his budget was going to take....trust me, he wasn't thinking about BR having a better chance to win the game...he couldn't have cared less!!!

As a parent of three former varsity athletes at CHS I must commend the BR and CHS teams and fans last night. The game was played with great intensity and talent by both teams. With the fall weather, full moon and fantastic setting, it was a great night. As I was walking back to the car, I couldn't help but wonder why such enthusiasm, local loyality and support could not be mustered for bigger issues like supply budgets, classroom sizes and technical programs that teach employable skills. Those issues incorporate the real game, the real competitiveness these young men and women must win.

I went to a high school that had a total enrollment of 126 the year I graduated. Oregon in the 1970s. There were AAA, AA and A teams based on enrollment. We were "A".

Our football team played nobody both ways.

Under the same coach, the school won the state championship in football in 1969 and 1970.
