GOP Sen. Sam Aanestad seeks state lieutenant governor post
Veteran Grass Valley legislator in crowded Republican field
State Sen. Sam Aanestad has joined a crowded field in the race for California lieutenant-governor. Current Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi is making a strong bid to succeed U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher in the Nov. 3 runoff for her Bay Area seat. That sets up an open field for next year’s lieutenant-governor’s election. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger would appoint a successor but seven candidates have already put their names forward for the June primary – three Democrats and four Republicans. Aanestad, R-Grass Valley, is being termed out of office after eight years representing the 4th District. The district takes in a broad swath of Northern California, including the communities of Rocklin, Loomis and Lincoln. His district also stretches from North Auburn to Grass Valley along both sides of Highway 49. Other Republican contenders at this point are state Sen. Jim Denham of Salinas, state Sen. Jim Battin of Palm Desert, and Assemblyman George Plescia of San Diego. Three Democrats have also announced their candidacy for the June primary – Mervin Evans, Dean Florez and Alan Lowenthal. A dentist who was named 2006 California Charter School Legislator of the Year by the California Charter Schools Association, Aanestad said he’ll be running on conservative values “such as free enterprise, individual liberty and the freedom of the individual to succeed.” “They may sound old-fashioned, but those are still the values of most of the people of this state, and those are the values I will bring to the lieutenant governor’s office,” Aanestad said. Tom Hudson, president of the Placer Republican Party, said Monday that while his position dictates that he not endorse candidates, he was pleased to see Aanestad enter the race.

Coincidentally, the trial of Kevin Ring for 10 felony counts of influence-peddling and corruption started today.
Mr. Ring's former boss, John Doolittle, and his wife Julia, are named as a co-conspirators. Jack Abramoff is not expected to testify, nor are the two disgraced lawmakers mentioned most frequently in the case, John Doolittle and Ernest Istook of Oklahoma. Both are Republicans who resigned their seats when the Abramoff scandal broke. Culture of Corruption.
"A dentist who was named 2006 California Charter School Legislator of the Year by the California Charter Schools Association, Aanestad said he’ll be running on conservative values “such as free enterprise, individual liberty and the freedom of the individual to succeed.”
Anti public schools, anti working class, anti civil rights, supports "freedom of the individual to succeed" meaning less taxes on the rich, corporate welfare and he toes the Republican party line.
Sounds like a Doolittle or McClintock clone.

Charter Schools are public schools
Whoops! I can always count on you, momof11, to straighten me out;-) Charters are privately owned and operated and governed by self-appointed boards of trustees. There needs better accountability for charter schools. Currently charter schools are being closed for political reasons.
"But no matter how well intentioned or successful, charter schools are part of a national conservative agenda to take public education out of citizens’ hands and put it in the hands of powerful individuals and corporations.' Source: saveourschools.com
" Charter schools are part of the reinvention of public education. They first emerged in the 1990s as a prominent and controversial school reform idea. Parents, teachers, and community organizations are the founders of most charter schools, but some are started by for-profit companies.Charter schools are public schools that have been freed of many restrictive rules and regulations." Newcastl Elementary School is a Charter School, it is not privately owned. It is part of our Placer County School system. ChuxxR, you are misguided on this one. Please tell all of us what freedoms this school has that other schools don't have, as the curriculum is set by the state just like Ophir/Loomis, Penryn or any of the Auburn Unified District schools are guided by. you're so funny. Very cute how you use a quote from an organization sponsored by the single worst school district in the country to try to convince us all that public education is now controlled by citizens but "powerful individuals & corporations" are trying to take over using charter schools, when actually the inverse is true. But hey, it's all those evil republicans, whatever.
And btw, I'm sure that you are aware that familyeducation.com is owned by Pearson International, a multibillion euro company that sells textbooks and multimedia education materials to schools worldwide. Yea, it is actually one of those evil greedy corporations that you hate that control school district curricula materials used in public schools. Since they have already cultivated "successful relationships" with those "powerful individuals" that select curricula and determine state standards throughout the country, they would prefer not to have to break up those large lucrative orders into smaller, more labor intensive, and therefore, expensive orders. That kind of a system, where individual parents and/or teachers control purchasing and demand service, could really cut into their profit margin.
So all in all, you get an C for effort but F for execution and A+ for comedic value.
OK momof11, I have been sliced and diced by you before. Thanks for keeping it real. While I don't support the way schools are required to purchase books and other media learning tools, I would much rather have an overseeing body when it comes to text book selection. Some charter schools are good, very good in fact, while others are corrupted by outside interests like religion and racial bias.
Yes, chuxxr, it's really unfortunate that you seem to think that individuals in voluntary associations practicing self determination is corrupting but that coercive central planning is somehow liberating. I don't think I will ever understand how you got there but I hope you will see the light one day.
Charter schools are run by private companies and decide who to hire and fire as teachers- it's a very innocent sounding way to use your tax dollars to kill public school support and funding, discriminate against certain races and religions, and cut benefits such as living wages, insurance, and retirement, all at the same time.
That photo selection is absolutely priceless.
