Nevada County pot raid nets big numbers
Nevada County law enforcement has tallied up the amount of marijuana seized from a rural plantation and the numbers are big. According to Sheriff Keith Royal, a raid Wednesday morning on gardens located on 360 acres of land owned by a North San Juan man has yielded 135 pounds of processed marijuana and 602 plants. As well, $200,000 in cash was recovered. The alleged grower — 55-year-old Charles Hilkey — was arrested on federal drug-related charges along with another individual, whose name was not being released. Two others — Melissa Thomas, 51, of North San Juan, and Douglas Schuurman, 32, of Clairmont – were charged with planting and cultivating marijuana. Schuurman is also charged with transporting and selling marijuana and criminal conspiracy. An earlier release said Hilkey is suspected of earning about $1.9 million from the plantation during the past two years.

Pure capitalism at work here.
Demand + ability to satisfy demand = profit
The other important factor in this equation is how the government props up the high price of this specific product by limitiing the "ability to satisfy demand" by keeping it illegal.
That's farm subsidy plain and simple!
Follow the money. Law enforcement profits from programs like this. The general population could care less. This should be a "non crime" and eventually will be.
Boy, I bet we see some angry letters from Ron Lowe soon. His "anger medicine" might be in short supply.
Big Deal,Pot Is Used For Med,Purposes. Are You Proud Of Yourself Nevada C. Sheriff's.
I don't disagree with the thought of marijuana being a licensed and legal product to sell. Remember law enforcement is enforcing what they are mandated and funded to do...pot and cultiviating is illegal....if you want the way law enforcement is administered or you want marijuana to be legal do something about it. MJ users can unite, find a powerful lobbyist and start lobbying at the state and federal level.....once your money starts outweighing the other lobbying group's money, you'll have what you want. It's just the way our wonderful government works. :o)
The idea that "medicinal marijuana is legal" means that anyone can grow it, sell it to high school kids, and make millions from it is OK is absurd.
This guy is a crudball and deserves federal prison. He is no different than someone cooking meth.
wow, Yosemite_Sam.. after quite the chuckle I do feel inclined to at least comment on your ignorance. First of all, I love that you are under the ridiculous impression that the growth of medical marijuana is a tool used to make millions off of HIGH SCHOOL KIDS!!!! HAHAHAHHAHA.. you've got to be kidding me! Let me inform you of how far you must've had to reach inside of your rectum to pull that one out. Children are in no way involved with the work that Mr. Hilkey was doing. High school kids who want to smoke weed will find it and smoke it with or without the 360 acres referenced here. In fact i happen to know that the people reaping the benefits from his former operation were those in true need of the medicine. And as far as you assuming that "this guy is a crudball" when in fact you clearly don't know what or who you are even referring to.. i would try educating yourself about a topic before feeling that you have some kind of logical comment to make about it. In case you aren't aware, cooking meth (a very dangerous and lucrative drug) is in NO way related to harvesting a marijuana plant (a medical miracle for many suffering in this world). The only reason anyone even cares that this operation was ongoing is that the government wasn't receiving their "fair share" of the proceeds. The DEA couldn't care less that you think your high schooler might be somehow affected. You, Yosemite_Sam are truly an idiot
I would just like to say yeehaw to mister582 for dissing yosemite_sam!!! It pretty much makes me sick for a lowlife like him,YS, (I guess it's a him) to talk dirt about something and someone he knows nothing about. I grew up with Charlie in Sams Valley, Oregon and know he's a good guy and I know he is doing something that needs to be done. Some people that need it can't grow for themselves. We need people like Charlie and his fellow growers. I also have a medical card, but only grow for myself. And for sure, kids are the last people he would even think of producing for! Yeah Yo sam, you are an idiot. And now everyone knows.
