Budget paints bleaker picture for supervisors
Placer County supervisors will consider a bleaker budget picture today, now that the state Legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger have patched together a plan to address California’s $26.3 billion deficit. The new view forecasts a further $26 million shortfall for the county. Placer supervisors approved an interim spending plan in late May that balanced out an estimated $23 million more in expenditures mostly tied to wage increases against flattening revenues. That meant an 11.1 percent drop in the county budget – to $769 million – and actions that include a once-a-month furlough program for workers. The other shoe dropped last month with the budget agreement at the Capitol that includes the use of revenues that had been initially earmarked for local jurisdictions. In a report to be presented today by CEO Tom Miller’s office, the anticipated additional $26 million shortfall includes $17.5 million in state reductions. Also projected is a further reduction in Public Safety Sales Tax revenue of $3.4 million. Miller said that given prudent actions by the board over the past several years, the county is positioned to address the challenges it is facing. “However these challenges will result in the delivery of less services than in previous years, given the severity of the reductions facing the county,” Miller said. Board budget workshops will take place Aug. 18-19 to consider options to close the $26 million funding gap.

"Miller said that given prudent actions by the board over the past several years..." ROTFLMAO
Who's the spin doctor that wrote this one?
"Placer supervisors approved an interim spending plan in late May that balanced out an estimated $23 million more in expenditures mostly tied to wage increases against flattening revenues."
Why are there wage increases in a recession? Sounds like the same argument the sherrifs dept has....
auburnite....how many articles are you gonna find to express your hate for the Sheriffs Department. What is it that they did to you I wonder? It is getting a bit redundant though.
catdaddy, I have an equal opportunity opinion, no exceptions, and a taxpayer that is tired of paying increased taxes with un fettered spending..and the so called "entitled" positions.....and retirements....any more questions?
Yes auburnite I do. How much do you think a Deputy Sheriff should reduce their pay? Do you feel they are overpaid and if so why? What is a an "entiled" position? Do you expect to get quality employee's without giving them some sort of incentive like a retirement plan? (which is what the private sector does). Is it the fault of the rank and file Deputy that the leaders that the voters elected are spendaholics? I to am tired of paying taxes for government waste!!! My point is I don't believe they are trying to milk the tax payer. I believe they are probably just happy to have a job in this economy just like you and me but that doesn't mean they should just take whatever scraps the County is willing to give out. They are taking cuts, what else do you want?
Auburnite just does drive by posts of his ignorance and hatred for law enforcement and fails to back any of it with facts. Don't waste your breath. He should repay the taxpayers for the money spent on his overnight stays at the jail.
How about the super raises for The Assistant CEOs, now, those are big ones. Been away on a trip and come back to read about questionable hiring practices and raises for people with six figure salaries and we're worrying about raises for Deputies. Yes there are more of them but at least they do perform a service to the community. What do the "Assistants" do for you besides suck us dry?
