Sheriff’s Association, county reach tentative agreement
Two-year proposed contract needs member, board approval

Deputy Sheriff’s Association leaders walked away with a tentative two-year contract agreement with Placer County.

Andrew Scott, association vice president, confirmed Monday afternoon that the two groups had left negotiations with a deal that will save the county about $935,000.

“We signed an agreement with the county that saves an excess of $935,000,” Scott said. “It meets all the county’s fiscal uncertainties for the next two years in regard to the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.”

CEO Tom Miller also confirmed Monday that county had reached an early agreement. He said the proposed contract will be presented to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday during closed session.

Miller said the matter will likely be heard in open session at a future board meeting. He described Monday’s meeting with the association as “very productive” and said he expects supervisors to be “impressed” with the contract.

“(The association) is taking responsible steps to assist the county in these tough financial conditions,” Miller said. “We appreciate the hard work and tough decisions they trying to make along the way.”

Neither Miller nor Scott would reveal the details of the contract. Miller cited fair practice rules and Scott said the contract still needs to be presented to and approved by association members.

Scott said the association is working to convene its members as soon as possible to vote on the proposed contract.

Josh Tindall, president of the association, said that members will have 30 days after a meeting to vote on the contract.

“We have an agreement that we agreed to bring to our membership for a vote in lieu of getting imposed on,” Tindall said.

Scott said association leaders still did not receive any confirmation that savings from their contract would go into the public safety budget. In an earlier Journal report, Scott said deputies felt it was easier to make a sacrifice in their compensation if they knew the money would be spent on protecting residents.

Scott said Miller “refused” to commit that the money would stay in public safety.

Miller said supervisors put “tens of millions” of dollars into the public safety budget every year.

“We’re very confident that the board will put that money to good use for the benefits of the citizens,” Miller said.

Tom Miller said, “We’re very confident that the board will put that money to good use for the benefits of the citizens." - he's kidding right? They've done such a GREAT job of proving that to the citizens of Placer County over the past few years that we can all be confident that it will continue. What a joke!

"Neither Miller nor Scott would reveal the details of the contract. Miller cited fair practice rules and Scott said the contract still needs to be presented to and approved by association members.":

Yes where are the details? afraid to reveal how much of a raise is going to occur in a recession? more union doubletalk and id like to see where the supposed 935k in savings coming from..certainly no cuts

Just in the recent past, I remember a private airplane flight for one of our supervisors, supposedly paid back - but only after getting caught!

OMG Auburnite! Just when I think you couldn't possibly post a post as ignorant as the one you posted yesterday about negotiations you surprise me. Listen carefully, they can't speak to the press until it is presented to the membership. They have to have a meeting first to do that. GEEZ! Oh, and as I said yesterday, a raise would be mandated by prop f, which was approved by the voters. You do vote right? Or do you just post?

Wow! I still have not seen what miller and his minion are doing to help save money.

Samthree, I have the answer to that. Nothing. The $935,000 DSA is being robbed of will pay for lots of chartered flights, dinners in DC, take home cars, per diem, travel, etc. Plus you have to pay for two assistant CEO's who make roughly 500,000 combined. Yes, that is two assistant CEO's. Then we have to pay Tom Miller.

Auburnnite: I find it hard to believe that you say what you say. How can a raise be achieved if the article states that the county is getting almost a million dollars in concessions from the deputies. That money is coming out of the salary for the DSA members.

A raise is still a raise.....saying that you are not taking 10% but still taking 5% is still a raise..in these times a waste of taxpayer money...the 1977 proposition should be negated....

Auburnite, the legally mandated pay increases for deputies was enacted by Placer County voters decades ago. I seem to remember the law was reaffirmed by voters twice in the last few years. The majority of local voters disagree with you that the law should be repelled. Based on the Journal's salary comparisons in the last article the law seems to be working as intended.

The deputies did not have to give anything back, but they volunteered to it anyway. Even Miller admits that. Of course I wouldn't trust Miller and I wonder why the supervisors haven't gotten rid of a such divisive and apparently dishonest "leader". They need to hire someone the people can trust. Its time already.

Dear Auburnite, I've waited till now to post because I assume you have been busy this morning tending your proposition 215 marijuana plants and watching today's Oprah show.

The hard working men and women of the sheriff's department are faced with pay cuts just like the rest of the county workers. Financial times are hard and the county is going to see less money coming in for the next couple of years. Tom Miller is going to put this on the backs of the employee's instead of stopping construction on parking lots or funneling money into the ridiculous "Placer Legacy" fund.

The issue of Proposition F was taken to the voters a couple years back and it was not voted away. How is it a "waste of taxpayer money" to pay our local law enforcement a decent wage so good people can be hired and retained? Whatever the percentage of the raise they will still be loosing money and/or giving up benefits that saves the county $935,000. That's money that does not go to the employee and their family.

I would like to know, what do you want to see tax dollars spent on if not public safety?

Good point Realist! When are the people going to question Miller's actions? Didn’t he run Yuba or Yolo County into the ground before coming here?

Auburnnite-Come on, its money out of pocket for our deputies. These cuts go beyond what PPEO has sacrificed. Miller does not have the courage to face the heat that will come from the public when they learn he has essentially pulled public safety from the streets to save money.

Fellow taxpayers of Placer, when it's all said and done, what do the BOS and Miller/Colwell really think about the safety of the public? I like having law enforcement living in my neighborhood. With these sanctions against the DSA, where are they supposed to live, Stockton, Bakersfield and then commute?

Auburnite - Do you have a job? Because if you do, I want you to know that I think that whatever they are paying you is 'a waste of money.' I'm not really concerned with what you do, whether it's a fair wage, or anything else for that matter. I'm just pretty much convinced that anything you take home from your job is a waste of money and you shouldn't get paid. You should definately come to work for free.

Sadie01, that's just one indiscretion, then you have the solar project, the very friendly solar project assessment, the even friendlier hiring of a sitting Supervisor's wife. Oh yeah, we should really worry about a raise for the lower wage earners.

Auburnite, I'm no union lover but I worry more about the obscene raises that the dis figure wage earners in the County get and how they are hired that whatever percentage the DSA will get, at least they do perform a service for the citizens while the others just pad their retirements.

I would venture to say that corruption in Placer County starts at the very top.
