Barely room for cars, much less bikes
Reader Input
Regarding bicyclists on our roads/Newcastle-Ophir area, I feel this is a safety issue. Bicycles should not be allowed on Power House Road from Newcastle to Auburn Folsom Road. The reason: between Mountain View Road and Oak Terrace (just past the Placer water treatment plant) there is barely room for two cars to pass through this narrow curve. Mind you, I’ve made several complaints to the road department as in this area (9430 Power House) the trees on both sides of the road overhang toward center. I’ve been forced into trees several times as have other residents in the area. (“Oh, we are busy.” “We will get to it.”) They can’t miss it, as I have flagged a tree with yellow caution tape. If the road is not wide enough for two cars to pass, then, in the interest of safety, we ought to ban cars, not bicycles from that section. I know that section of road. Two bicycles can pass each other just fine, with no safety issues whatsoever.
Bikes need to have a Lic. and insurance.... just like vehicles.
I drive and ride that road quite frequently as i have a friend that lives there. I bet that I can drive either way on that road 10 times before that fateful trip in which I encounter a car coming in the opposite direction. It is true that I don't normally drive on it during rush hour but really, how much traffic is on that road?
Using the LTE writer's logic all vehicles wider than a compact car should not be allowed on that road, What are the people that live on that road that have horses and pull horse trailers going to do? Get a transportation permit from the CHP and the County every time they go out with their trailers, the same will apply to travel trailers, motor homes and all other non compliant vehicles.
I hope that my little attempt at satire gets the point across. Fact of the matter is that if I were driving I would much rather face the bicycles than an oncoming one ton dually pulling a 102" wide three horse trailer, now that rig can put me in the bushes for sure, the bikes, no problem, plenty of room left.
Let's get this straight, Ms. Gibson; some trees have grown out into the roadway so you want to ban bicycles. In other words, the choice is to either (a) spend hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to enact and enforce via constant police presence a law that wouldn't stand up to a court challenge; or (b) spend a few hundred dollars to go out there and trim the trees. Ok. . .
I have a better idea for your 'personal' road: we'll ban all forms of transportation but for cars and trucks on your section of Power House Road-- in order to ban bicycles you also have to ban pedestrians, equestrians, motorized scooters, children, etc.-- then we can designate it a truck route and raise the speed limit to 55 mph! After all the tees are cut down per your demand, we'll have room for a couple of cloverleaf offramps. Now we can rezone Power House Road the new Power House Industrial Zone, placing rendering plants and an aluminum smelter next to your house! Have fun living on the new Power House Freeway!
Why don't you just go out there and trim the trees yourself?
Get rid of the cars!
Since I live within a mile of Ms. Gibson's road (it's hers you know) I took a drive over to Powerhouse Road. What an abominable mess you made Ms. Gibson. By strewing several yards of plastic tape along the roadside you are guilty of vandalism and littering.
Placer County should force you to pay for cleaning up your mess. Since we have the identity, area of residence, and admission of guilt by the person responsible for this mess (you Ms. Gibson), it will be easy for the authorities to find you and force you to pay for the cleanup.
I was so distracted by the yards of caution tape that I almost failed to notice the 34 CHP cars that were parked along Powerhouse Rd during today' zero tolerance day on that roadway. I had to put down my cell phone, slam on the brakes, put on my seat belt, close my door properly and quit shaving all at the same time.
Yellow caution tape and maximum enforcement along Powerhouse Rd should be prohibited.
loomis,
At least you didn't have to put your cheeseburger down.
