Streetscape launches with morning groundbreaking
The City of Auburn will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Streetscape Phase 1 Project at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15. This event will take place in the future Endurance Plaza directly across from the Wells Fargo Bank at the intersection of High and Lincoln Way in Downtown Auburn. The program will include remarks from Mayor Mike Holmes, and Auburn city councilmembers Bridget Powers and Keith Nesbitt. The first phase of the larger $20 million Streetscape project is estimated to take six months of construction. Design elements in the first phase include moving utilities underground, new lighting, installation of stormwater filtration and creation of an Endurance Plaza that will include art pedestals, a fire pit and a living Christmas tree. ~ Michelle Miller-Carl

I wonder why there always seems to be money (in this case $20M) to "improve" streets, yet there is no money to pay the employees, no money to help businesses stay open, no money for the food closet, no money to build a permanent homeless shelter...
The funding mechanism is by way of developer fees paid for new construction under state law for redevelopment. Under those laws these funds cannot be used for any other purpose, no matter how worthy they may be. For instance, they could be used to fund the restoration of the faces of the buildings to take off the ugly 1960s and 1970s facades, but not to help keep the businesses in those buildings open.
Can't wait to see what a mess this will be like in a few years!!! Why can't Auburn spend money where it is needed? $20 million for such foolishness. Is it any wonder why our taxes are so high? And then we get to hear all the movers and shakers aka good ol' boys speak too. Anyone ever tell this group the world doesn't care about them----big ducks, little puddle!!!!!!!!!!
