Mt. Vernon excited about recent wine wins

Ryan Taylor, head winemaker for Mt. Vernon Winery, holds up a glass of the Auburn winery’s 2007 White Port, which recently won a California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition gold ribbon.

Mt. Vernon Winery has a lot to celebrate this summer.

Owners Jim and Lynda Taylor — son Ryan Taylor is head winemaker — recently found out they’d received nine ribbons in the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition. Add the two golds, three silvers and four bronzes from the California State Fair to two San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition silvers and nine more from the Finger Lakes International Competition in New York — six bronzes, two golds and even a double gold, for the 2006 Old Vine Zinfandel — and you’ve got 20 ribbons that have come in over the past 60 days or so, Jim Taylor said.

“It really helps boost up people wanting to come see us,” Jim Taylor said. “I think, first thing that it proves to us is that we’re fairly consistent with our wines.”

Jim Taylor is proud that all nine of the wines entered in the California State Fair competition received ribbons.

“It shows that our wines are consistently good, across the board,” he said.

Ryan Taylor is also pretty excited about the recent awards.

“It’s not a bad thing,” he said with a laugh. “It’s really cool for a smaller, family run winery here in Auburn.”

The awards let Ryan Taylor know he’s on the right track.

“It’s a good double-check, that others have the same taste I do,” he said.

Gary Moffat, owner of Old Town Auburn’s Carpe Vino, said the Taylors have plenty to celebrate.

“Winning awards at wine competitions is a big deal, especially for new wineries or those located outside of the major producing areas such as Napa and Sonoma,” he said. “Mt. Vernon is a great example, and the recognition it has received helps to validate the quality of the wine it is producing.”

Mt. Vernon Winery’s tasting room, pouring more than dozen wines free of charge, is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday-Sunday and located at 10850 Mt.Vernon Road in Auburn.
