One fireworks-related arrest and a handful of public intoxication charges were some of the calls authorities responded to over the Fourth of July weekend.

Below is a recap of law enforcement activity over the holiday:

Auburn police make handful of arrests

A man who reportedly set off fireworks in Auburn was among the arrestees over the holiday weekend.

Michael Traverse, 25, of Auburn, was arrested by the Auburn Police Department Saturday on charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance and resisting or obstructing a public officer, according to Auburn Police Sgt. David Lawicka.

Police responded to the 200 block of Racetrack Street in Auburn when they heard a report of someone setting off fireworks. Lawicka said Traverse was the responsible party at the incident.

Traverse was booked into Placer County Jail just after midnight July 5. He remained in custody Monday on $22,500 bail.

In addition to Traverse’s arrest, Auburn Police arrested two people on charges of public intoxication and one person on a charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance. A third person was arrested on charges of public intoxication and resisting or obstructing a public officer.

Lawicka said overall Auburn Police officers had “minimal problems” with the crowds that attended the Auburn Family Fourth event held at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Downtown Auburn. He said most of the arrests came from patrols of local neighborhoods.

“For a Fourth of July that happens on a weekend, it was pretty typical for us,” Lawicka said Monday. “Nothing out of the ordinary.”

State Parks reports large crowds

Despite more than 500 vehicles filling two Auburn State Recreation Area hotspots, state parks officials reported “smooth sailing” over the Fourth of July weekend.

Upper Lake Clementine’s day use area was filled to its 267-vehicle capacity before noon on Saturday, according to state park ranger Scott Liske. The American River Confluence had about 300 parked vehicles surrounding it on Saturday and Sunday, Liske added.

No drownings were reported in either area, Liske said.

Park rangers arrested two for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and three were taken to Placer County Jail on charges of being drunk in public, Liske said.

Rangers and Cal Fire crews responded to a fire that burned about an acre of seasonal grass under the Foresthill Bridge at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Liske said authorities believe the fire was “human caused” but it remains under investigation.

State parks announced their summer restrictions following the weekend holiday. Visitors are no longer allowed to bring barbecues because of the potential fire danger this summer. Campgrounds are still open and registered campers are allowed to cook in designated fire rings at sites.

Liske said that could change later pending weather conditions.

Liske added that rangers spoke to several people who were jumping off rocks into the water below.

“The rangers have noticed a number of people jumping off the rocks,” Liske said. “It seems naturally inviting but it is not allowed and is very dangerous.”

No fireworks problems for Auburn Fire

Auburn’s zero tolerance message regarding fireworks seemed to set in over the holiday weekend, according to Auburn Fire Chief Mark D’Ambrogi.

D’Ambrogi said crews did not respond to any fireworks-related incidents over the weekend.

He said when emergency personnel came across people with fireworks, they instructed them to take them outside of city limits to an area where they were allowed.

“Overall, the weekend was pretty quiet,” D’Ambrogi said.
