Government can butt out
Reader Input

In response to James Shaw “McClintock vote up in smoke” (Reader Input, June 16), what part of the government not interfering in your life don’t you like?

The fact is that people already know about this stuff, and they choose to smoke anyway. This legislation does nothing to address the real problem: addiction.

It is another example of form over substance. I for one, want the government involved in as little as possible, kind of like the original intent of our founding fathers.

Let freedom ring!

I have to agree with Phil. I don't want the government at any level dictating every facet of my life. Just look at California, we still don't have a budget but we are protecting people against themselves by posting caloric values in chain restaurants. Just sit at one of them for a couple of hours, most of the people eating there shouldn't but they do anyway. Showing the calories is not going to make any difference.

Keep the original intent of government.

Well said.

The government should stay out of our personal lives, except when it comes to marriage.

Joszef_Pelikan: Let's see how many hypocrites take your bait.

...and reproduction. That's another exception.

McClintock has taken minimal effort to affect the community he serves.

Furthermore, when local leaders go to visit him in DC, his response is my hands are tied, the democrats control the House, I am a freshman. What an up lifting political leader. The most laser question I can pose is, "If you can not get anything done, you are against 80% of what is proposed, your vote is cancelled out by the majority, then why did we send YOU?!!!!"

The McClintock message was delivered to both local politicians and business leaders here in the Auburn Community. He needs to get his hand out of his pockets, step outside in 5th floor freshman office, walk over to the House and start dialog with the "enemy" to get local concerns off is desk. It is called selling in the real world. We sent you there to represent us, lobby for us, represent us.

Regardless of what he is against, many of us care about what he is for and what he can get done. Everyone can look good we they have the majority, the great ones look good even when times are tough.

Joszef_Pelikan, you and Miuwtant must racist, your comments exclude affirmitive action.

Fourgen,

What are you talking about? What does affirmative action have to do with government interference with personal choice?

??

McClintock takes tobacco money to let tobacco companies market an addictive substance to minors while voting against their having access to health care. Once addicted they will have increased health problems for all of their adult lives, costing the public more. Plus second hand smoke is proven to cause health problems and illness in bystanders and children of smokers.

Plus the government subsidizes the growing of Tobacco.

All in all, not a government revenue neutral activity.

Actually CanyonRat, I think smokers cost the public less. Smokers tend to collect medicare and SSI longer than non-smokers.

Joszef_Pelikan: Didn't you mean to say that smokers collect these benefits for a shorter period of time?

I meant non-smokers tend to collect medicare and SSI longer than smokers. Sorry.
