A big rig with a load of tires caught fire as it was traveling westbound on I-80 just before the Colfax exit at 8 a.m. Thursday.

CalFire and Colfax Volunteer Fire units responded and quickly put out the blaze. A HazMat team has been called to the scene.

Traffic is being diverted off the freeway to Rollins Lake Road and through downtown Colfax.

Westbound lanes remain closed until 5 p.m. At one point, traffic on Interstate 80 was backed up to Yuba Gap, reported the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
