Downed power lines spark fire
More than 800 residents without power
By Jenifer Gee Journal Staff Writer

A knock to a power pole left more than 800 residents without power and sparked a grassfire near a cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

Equipment from a construction site near the Newcastle Cemetery at the corner of Taylor and Kentucky Greens roads in Newcastle knocked down a power pole, which caused power lines to fall and ignite a brush fire, according to Capt. Tom Webb of Cal Fire.

Webb said the fire was under an acre and was contained within an hour after it ignited at about 12:30 p.m.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company spokesman Brian Swanson said about 860 customers were impacted by the outage at about 1 p.m. As of Tuesday afternoon, power to all but one customer was restored. Swanson said they expected the final customer to have electricity later in the afternoon.

Swanson said it appeared an excavator hit a power pole.

Two Cal Fire engines responded as well as one engine each from Rocklin, Penryn and Newcastle fire departments.

No injuries were reported, according to Webb.
