Resident hosting monthly wine tours in Colfax
Elan Vitkoff, who settled in Colfax after 27 years in San Francisco, has organized a monthly tour of local wineries. Vitkoff, whose vision is to make her adopted hometown a “destination,” serves as the guide and designated driver for wine tours held on the second Saturday of each month. “I have been to some of the top wine tours in Napa where you pay a $10 fee and there is no sight of even a pretzel to eat,” Vitkoff said. “I wanted to do something with quality.” The monthly tour is limited to 10 or 12 people, which gives participants an opportunity to get to know each other, she continued. The tour begins at 1 p.m. at Fox Barrel Cider Co., 1213 So. Auburn St. “They provide a variety of cheeses, fruit and crackers as you taste their three award winning ciders,” she continued. At the second stop, owners of Montoliva Winery in Chicago Park offer meatballs with their red wines. Solune Winegrowers in Grass Valley, the third stop on the tour, serve Brie and pecans with their wines. Vitkoff hosted the first tour in February and is anxious to see its popularity grow. “Even though it is not a big ’money maker,’” she said, “it has been a successful community project to boost the economy of Colfax.” Her goal is to get Colfax recognized as a destination by other foothill communities and even San Francisco residents. “I want people to discover the charm of this city,” she said. Cost for the tour is $25. To make reservations for the tour, visit www.colfaxwinetour.com or call 305-4050.
