Sacramento, CA—May 20, 2009 – Join in the largest disability advocacy event of the year: Capitol Action Day, Sacramento, May 27. Approximately 2000 people with disabilities and their allies will be at the Capitol for the 6th Annual Disability Capitol Action Day from 10am-3pm. This year’s event marks the 10th anniversary of the 1999 U.S. Supreme Court Olmstead decision, which affirmed the right of people with disabilities to the services and supports needed to live in the community rather than in segregated institutions such as nursing homes, etc. Despite that Supreme Court ruling, California continues to slash vital programs like In Home Support Services, Supplemental Security Income and Medi-Cal that allow us to live independently in the community. It’s been 10 years since the Olmstead Decision. What is California waiting for?

Disability Capitol Action Day Agenda

· 10:00 AM – March to the Capitol from US Bank Building on 6th St.

· 11:00 AM – Educational Rally & Entertainment on the west steps of the Capitol

§ Speakers include Lois Curtis of Georgia, the surviving plaintiff in the Olmstead case and Ruth Shelton of Sacramento, who lives in the community after 50 years in institutions

· 12:30 PM – Lunch

· 1:30 – 3:30PM – Legislative Visits

The Disability Action Coalition includes organizations from across the state that represents and supports independent living, equality and disability civil rights.

Who attends Disability Capitol Action Day?

Anyone who wishes to attend the event is welcome. We encourage all ILC, Systems Change Advocates, and Executive Directors to organize their community and come together for this 6th annual event.

Thank you.

"The theme of this year’s event is based on the 1999 U.S. Supreme Court Olmstead Decision which requires all states, including California, to implement an Olmstead plan that provides services which allow people with disabilities the choice of living in the community as opposed to institutions"

Since when does the Supreme Court make the law?

Since the decision in 1999. My point is the keynote speaker is Lois Curits. Here is a link about her: http://www.atlantalegalaid.org/impact.htm

The Supreme Court did not make the law, Congress did. It's called the Americans With Disabilities Act. If you want to look it up, it's is in title 42 of the United States Code, beginning with Section 12101. If Congress didn't like the way the Supreme Court interpreted the statute, Congress could have repealed or modified the statute.

Say what you want about the ADA act, but don't blame the Supreme Court for doing its job.

Thank you for your insight gulliver. The ADA is very important.

There are still 9 seats left on the bus. We will be meeting tomorrow at 8am at the Nevada St. Station and leave at 8:30am.

now I only have around 4 seats left.
