Laura Pinnick and her dog, Ringo, enjoy time at the Ashley Memorial Dog Park in Auburn. Pinnick is considered one of the “driving forces” behind the park and will be honored for her efforts Friday as the first-ever ARD Friend of Recreation award recipient.

An Auburn woman will be recognized for lending a paw to the community’s canine population.

Laura Pinnick’s tireless work to bring the Ashley Memorial Dog Park to Auburn earned her the first-ever Auburn Recreation District Friend of Recreation award. The award will be presented at this year’s State of the Community dinner and is given to someone who has made a “significant” contribution to parks and recreation activities in Auburn.

“It was a nice surprise,” Pinnick said of hearing the news. “I was very pleased the dog park was going to be recognized at the State of the Community dinner.”

The Friday dinner will have a special meaning for Pinnick because it marks the exact one-year anniversary of the park’s opening date, April 17, 2008.

“It’s amazing how many people have made friends through the dog park and how many new dogs and new puppies people have been able to adopt because now they have a safe place to take their dogs and socialize,” Pinnick said.

Pinnick proposed the idea of a dog park in September 2004, when she realized there was not a large, public fenced-in area to take her champagne Labrador Ringo – who is the “founding paw” of the park - to romp around.

With the blessing of Auburn Recreation District officials, Pinnick set off on a four-and-a-half-year fundraising effort to make the park a reality.

Key contributors – Arnold Lyon and Kathy and Norma Harris – donated needed money and numerous community members donated more than 1,300 hours of service. The park was named after Kathy Harris’ deceased daughter, Ashley.

“What is incredible about the park is it was really created, designed and constructed by the community for the community,” Pinnick said.

Recreation District Administrator Kahl Muscott, however, commends Pinnick for leading the charge.

“Laura was the absolute driving force behind getting the dog park complete,” Muscott said. “Because of her dedication, the community now has an extremely popular facility that cost the district very little money to create.”

Scott Holbrook, recreation district director, added that Pinnick’s service was unique.

“Laura’s efforts and persistence exemplified in the successful completion of the dog park is something I have never seen from any other ARD volunteer,” Holbrook said. “She truly deserves this honor and recognition.”

Muscott said the dog park is arguably the recreation district’s “most used” facility. He said sometimes he’s seen almost 50 dogs in the park with their owners tagging along.

Today, Pinnick and a committee help maintain the park through various tasks such as placing trash bags in containers, refreshing materials at the information station and more.

She said she’s also noticed those using the park doing their part to maintain it.

“So many people and volunteers involved with it take pride in it,” Pinnick said. “I could go to the park and see somebody sweeping the sidewalks or picking up litter.”

Pinnick said she is happy today to see so many in the community benefiting from a park they helped create. She said one the greatest compliments the park received is when somebody called it a little slice of heaven.

“It’s a little slice of heaven for people with dogs,” Pinnick said. “It’s a great way for people to exercise, get vitamin D from being outdoors and meet new people to talk about their dogs.”

Pinnick will receive her award April 17 at the Gold Country Fairgrounds at the State of the Community Dinner. Tickets are available at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, (530) 885-5616.

Please, this place is a nightmare so many dogs with no tags no current shots, only the decent folks pick up after there dog. I cant take my kids to the park without stepping in @#$%. Then the jerks that let the dogs run all over the whole park disregarding the leash law. Not to mention who ever feeds the disiesd cats that live there is breaking the law.

How can you tell what shots the dogs have had? Do you interrogate all the dog owners in the park?

AuburnLocal, Luckily there are several parks in Auburn. Presonally, all the soccer players at Regional annoy me. Not organized games, just a bunch of guys who take up all the flat areas of grass. That's why I got to the park by Beggs Field.

I tend to complain about a lot of things.... but even I think the dog park is great. I can't imagine someone having a problem with it.

I like the dog park, although my eyes raised a little in seeing how much it cost to build it. But then, I'm cheap.

Everything costs money. I think the dog park is a wonderful place and I'm thankful for it. Auburn Local, don't worry there's a hose at the bathrooms to wash off the shikaka from your shoes.

Our family uses both the dog park, and the 'kid park'. We all enjoy the park(s), and we pick up after both the dogs, and the boys!! What we enjoy more than anything is the decrease in 'perverted' behavior that used to take place in the bathrooms at Ashford. We don't see much anymore with all the dog park traffic, and that is truly the best thing ever. Nothing ruins a day at the park like your husband being solicited while taking one of the children to the bathroom!!

NO pushingvws, You have a fenced in area for the dog "shikaka", no one should have to put up with "washing it off their shoes" when their walking outsie the dog park area. How would you like it if my dog pooped in your front yard and I said "ah, just wash it off". Don't be an inconsiderate pet owner. You got your dog park, now do what you said you were going to do, keep it clean, and keep it contained. There's only half of the park left for children and picnics and frisbee, etc, don't blow it for the people who want to enjoy the only piece of the park that is left for them. If you want to talk about a health issue, some complain about the cigarette smoke in the dog park, but you have no problem with someone stepping in your dog's poop.

number3, you're fabricating. They are not that blatant, and they're not out soliciting men with children in tow. I've been to that park during the day many times, before the dog park, no one loitering around the bathrooms, no one soliciting anyone, pretty much.....uh, nothing but a few enjoying the park.

Some people are always looking for the negative. If the park is soooo bad... don't go. Go be miserable somewhere else & let other people have fun in the park with their dog.

Analyst, I have no reason to 'fabricate'. We used to see men in the bathrooms learing out into the parking lot thru the mesh window area. After the solicitation incident we spoke to a freind that works for APD. He confirmed that yes 'They' hang out there, and that was a problem area for APD.

Now we don't see the loitering, and for that we are thankful!

The things Laura went through to get this park going was crazy but yet she fought all the red tape and made a very positive thing for the community. Very few people have the drive to push for something they believe in like Laura did with this park. So Congrats Laura on your award your earned it
