Sierra College officials swore in a new chief this week.

At a Jan. 13 Sierra College Board of Trustees meeting, Officer Greg Murphy took the oath of office as Chief of Police for the Sierra Community College District.

“I am so thrilled to be here,” Murphy said in a news release. “I hope I can contribute a great deal to the growth of the police department.”

Murphy has more than 16 years of experience as a patrol, investigative and administrative officer. Murphy, whose career started patrolling the streets of east Los Angeles, received a letter of commendation in 2007 for developing and implementing an online course certificate program used statewide.

Murphy has also taught criminal justice courses at National University, University of Phoenix, Los Angeles City College, Los Rios Community College District and Sierra College. He’s also served as a police lieutenant for the University of California, Davis Police Department.

Over a dozen law enforcement officials from in and out of the state, including some from Colorado and Nevada, came to Murphy’s swearing-in ceremony.

Leo Chavez, Sierra College Superintendent/President, thanked all of the law officials for attending and expressed his excitement to have Murphy on board.

“We are excited to have someone with Greg’s experience and expertise join Sierra College,” Chavez said in a news release. “We are doubly pleased that he is also a long-standing Rocklin resident. We look forward to his leadership in advancing the capabilities of the college’s police services.”
